Harlem / Harry was a stray that was found on the streets of NYC. He was brought to NYCACC which is the NYC Municipal Shelter.<br/><br/>The shelter was and is always overcrowded therefore dogs are fearful and don't have a long time there.<br/><br/>Harlem's time was coming to an end and he was in danger of euthanasia. We are so fortunate that a caring woman stepped up to save his life.<br/><br/>These are HARLEM'S STATS:<br/><br/>Name of foster Halem (Harry) <br/>Approximate age 2.5 years from the shelter (5-7 years per the vet)<br/>Approximate weight 62 lbs<br/>Breed (s) pitbull mix<br/>Spayed or neutered? Unknown, never encountered<br/>On leash? Yes, he is a good walker<br/>Housetrained? Yes, for the most part, he has had some accidents when going out but good 95% of the time<br/>Crate trained? Yes, he is fine once in the crate but needs to be leashed to go in, doesn’t know to go in himself.<br/>Paper trained? No<br/><br/>Harlem (Harry) needs an INCREDIBLY PATIENT home. He is still very anxious and fearful and still needs a lot of work to reach his full potential. He has come a long way since leaving the shelter but will likely revert back somewhat when adopted and his adopter will need to understand coming out of his shell is likely only in the very beginning stage. Loud sounds also scare Harry so maybe a home outside of the city/in a more quiet neighborhood will be ideal. He has not really had much interaction with any children, dogs or other animals, but he may flourish with them, as he is very docile and not aggressive. <br/><br/>Interesting quirks/behaviors:<br/>LOVES being in bed (human bed) and staring at you.<br/><br/>Fear and anxiety with really everything. Harlem (Harry) needs someone to go really slow with him, not get angry with him, always encourage him and go at his pace.<br/><br/>I love Harlem! (Nicknamed Harry for ease). He is the sweetest dog for what he has been through, though there is so little that we know about him. When he came to me Harry was completely shutdown, did not leave his cage for nearly 3 weeks and could not look me in the eye. We started a very slow process of trust building and decompression and months later he is a completely different dog, though he still has so much work to do to reach his full potential. Harry loves to sleep with me in bed, sit on the couch with me to watch TV and sit under my desk while I work (and wait for food bits to drop). He has become curious over time, watching me from afar as I cook in the kitchen and accepts treats from my hand when I approach, on occasion. Harry’s absolute favorite and safe space is my bed, where he spends most of his days laying around and watching me. He is learning to eat treats from dog toys and to go on longer walks, which are still sometimes scary. He is very efficient on his walks, knowing to pee and poo just about every time we go out, can hold it 6-8 hours if needed and is a good leash walker. Harry is a low energy dog, prefers to be a couch potato and is incredibly gentle – he does not bark or bare his teeth. His personality is just coming out and I know he has so much more love to give and personality to shine. Harry does not ask for much, and just needs a loving, patient home that can go his pace, make him comfortable and give him kisses and snuggles when he’s ready.
