Harbor (MR26-148)'s Story

Meet Harbor!

Harbor is a 2-year-old Catahoula with a big heart, a soft spirit, and a deep love for his people. At 61 pounds, he's the kind of dog who wants to be included in the rhythm of family life-whether that's relaxing nearby, going for a walk, or simply being part of whatever his humans are doing.

When meeting new people or dogs, Harbor can be a little shy at first. He does best when introductions are slow, calm, and allowed to unfold at his pace. Once he feels safe, his friendly, affectionate nature begins to shine through.

Harbor is still building confidence in social situations, and every new experience is helping him grow. He enjoys toys, loves going for leash walks, and is highly food motivated, which makes him a fun and engaging partner for continued training and bonding.

He is also currently on medication to help support his anxiety, which is part of his ongoing care plan as he continues to build confidence and learn that the world is a safe place. Because of his anxiety and his past, his adoptive home will need to be adult-only or with older children. His future family will need to be comfortable maintaining this routine and working closely with him as he progresses.

Harbor will thrive in a patient, understanding home that is committed to going at his speed, celebrating small wins, and helping him continue to blossom into the confident dog he's meant to be. A meet-and-greet at the shelter is required to ensure a thoughtful and successful match for everyone involved.

If you're looking for a loyal companion who will grow deeper in trust and connection over time, Harbor is ready to begin that journey with you.
------
Many NMDR dogs have had limited prior socialization and may need time, patience, and support as they adjust to home life. Skills such as house training, leash walking, and handling may require continued practice. Progress will vary by individual dog. Homes with older children are often a good fit, depending on temperament. To learn more about NMDR and our adoption process, please visit our website.

National Mill Dog Rescue's Adoption Policy
At NMDR, we use a welcoming, conversation-based adoption process! We look at every applicant as a partner, offering honest education about our dogs' needs so you can make the best choice for your lifestyle. We generally do not deny adoptions based solely on yard size, housing type, adopter age, or having other pets. Because many of our dogs are rescued from commercial breeding facilities, we maintain a few firm safety and mission-aligned policies: Spay/Neuter Requirement: To help end the cycle of irresponsible breeding, all resident dogs in your home must be spayed or neutered. Homes with Children: Many of our dogs had limited socialization before rescue. Older kids are often a great match! Homes with younger children are considered individually based on the dog’s needs and the adopter’s experience with home management. Companions Only: Our dogs are adopted strictly as indoor family companions. Out-of-State Adopters: You are welcome to apply, but you must travel directly to the specific shelter housing the dog (in CO or MO) to complete the adoption. We do not ship or transport dogs. A Supportive Safety Net: Life is unpredictable, and sometimes a match isn't perfect. We discuss long-term safety nets with all adopters, and if a placement doesn't work out, we welcome our dogs back with zero judgment. Fees: Adoption fees vary by age and directly offset the extensive veterinary care, dental work, and rehabilitation each dog receives before adoption. Ready to meet your new best friend?
