Hi there, I'm Hank! Today is my birthday. Well, not really, but it feels like it. Every day holds a reason to celebrate in my book, so I just always pretend like it's my birthday. I'm silly like that. And I'm playful and fun and full of happy energy. My tail wags all the time, and I love everyone I meet. I can't wait to go on adventures with you and to exercise together and to do all the things that families do. I just want to be with you, living and loving every moment. I hope you want that too.

I'm gorgeous, not quite a year old, and a svelte 61-pound Retriever mix. I have beautiful and shiny black fur, the brightest smile, and an exuberant, delightful personality. I'm already housebroken and crate trained too. How about that? I originally came to Wayside last spring, when I was still a young pup. I got adopted by a nice family, but things didn't end up working out for me there. I needed more time and attention and exercise than they were able to give me. And I played rough with the cat too. I understand that my puppy energy isn't a good match for every home. But I know that I'll fit in perfectly with someone out there, right? I'm excited for all the possibilities that a new family will bring to my life. I'm tired of living in the shelter though, so I hope you come for me soon!

I'm thrilled to share with you that I'm a volunteer favorite! Partly, that's because I never have a bad day. I make everyone laugh, too, with my enthusiastic way of playing with my toys or splashing around in the kiddie pool or running around in the agility park in pure joy without a care in the world. Of course, one of my most endearing qualities is when I lean into you to get as close as possible, gently pushing my head under your hand, inviting you to pet me. I'm such an affectionate soul! I might be a little stressed and lonely in my kennel, but get me out and you'll see my lovely personality shine. Sometimes I get to go on field trips with my volunteer friends. It's so nice to have a break from the shelter, and I love all the attention. I ride really well in the car. And, even when places are new and strange to me, I quickly adapt. I love going to the local parks too, where I can explore and sniff to my heart's content. Special days with friends mean the world to me. I'll make such a nice friend for you too, if you just give me a chance.

I like to stay busy, and I hope you will include me in your life as much as possible. I'm happy to come when I'm called, and I already know lots of commands that I can't wait to show you. I'm ready to learn more though, so please teach me and train me throughout my life. I will thrive in a positive, consistent environment with lots of praise and encouragement when I'm a good boy. Training will help us bond, and it will help me be the best dog and a wonderful companion for you.

My previous family loved that I was such a friendly and loving dog with everyone I met. I was crated when no one was home. Like most pups, I find things to chew on or get into when I'm bored. I hope someone will be around with me as much as possible. I will need daily exercise to help me stay healthy and calm. I love going for walks, and I do quite well on my leash when I use a harness. I'm a strong fella, but with practice, I'll try my best to stay focused and by your side. Any time you feel like getting out in the fresh air for exercise, I'll be right there by your side!

When I bark, I have a deep voice, so I need a home where I don't bother apartment neighbors. I need to meet the whole family before we go home together, to make sure we're all a great match for each other. I love hanging out with other dogs! I offer play-bows to invite my dog friends to play with me, and I'm bouncy and wiggly and goofy with them. I prefer social, playful dogs who match my energy level. Having another dog around to teach me the ropes sounds wonderful to me! I will be fine as your only dog too, though, as long as you spend lots of time interacting and playing with me.

It's hard being a young, active dog in a homeless shelter. I'm still just a puppy in most ways, even though I'm fully grown. It's tough to compete with the little pups who are just starting out in life. We all deserve good homes. When you're considering which dog to adopt, I hope you will choose me. I have so much potential and so much to offer. I will love you with everything I've got. I'll be right by your side, every day. You can count on me, your trusted friend, your loyal dog. Please let me be that for you.

Please note that in order to make the best match possible, potential adopters must come to the Wayside Waifs in person to meet with an adoption counselor and complete the adoption process. All members of the household (including other pets, if possible) should be present to ensure the chosen pet is compatible with everyone. We do not place holds or do adoptions over the phone and we do not ship pets.
