Hank American Staffordshire Terrier Vine Grove, KY

Hank, a 70lb chunk of love, is a 6 yr old pit who came to us from Davies Co. Hank was surrendered by his previous owner who could no longer handle such a big guy due to physical impairment.

Hank was very scared his first day at ARC but warmed up soon to staff and volunteers. What we know is that Hank has lived as an indoor dog his entire life. He loves people and wants to be a part of daily activities. He does NOT like to be kept in a kennel so at ARC he is out in the yard the majority of the day. He has become fast friends with Keller, our deaf pittie.

Hank does not realize he is a big boy and because of this, he will do best in a home with no small children. He interacts well with children like at a park, on walks etc., but we would recommend he did not live with them. He doesn't seem to be interested in the cats but we are not a 100% sure, he will sniff, but usually turn away, especially if there is a hiss. From what has been seen he would get along best with a playmate of equal energy.

Hank has a lot of energy and gets easily excited, he benefits greatly from regular exercise, mental and physical enrichment, and training. He is learning impulse control through "wait" cues at gates and doorways and by getting a toy when the excitement gets too much for him. He likes to jump, so we also work with him by not rewarding the jumping behavior with attention and providing all the attention, praise and treats when he has "four on the floor" and is calm.

Hank needs a family that is willing to work with him continuously to manage hyperarousal (overstimulation), keep him exercised and enriched, and just give him the interaction and love he so very much craves from people!
