He arrived shy and unsure, but with consistency and kindness, he's begun to blossom — following his foster mom, seeking comfort from trusted people, and showing quiet affection.

He is tender-hearted, submissive, and non-reactive. Even when frightened, he has never shown aggression. Hangwa thrives with calm routines and adopters who understand confidence grows slowly — and beautifully.

Personality & Social Behavior

With Women

* Initially shy and hesitant to approach on his own
* After about two weeks, he begins to follow his person closely.
* Shows affection by staying nearby and snuggling once trust is built
* When nervous, he may freeze or flatten but never react defensively.
* Accepts handling and enjoys being held once comfortable

With Men

* Not specifically fearful of men; shy toward all unfamiliar people
* Deep voices, large builds, or sudden movements may startle him.
* Builds trust through calm presence and gentle interaction

With Children

* No direct experience
* Easily startled by loud sounds or sudden movement.

With Dogs

* Lives peacefully with a companion dog
* Very gentle and non-competitive; often lets other dogs “win.”
* Avoids pushy or intense dogs
* Prefers calm dogs or dogs of similar size
* Has not yet met large dogs

With Cats

* Shows mild curiosity only
* May look or briefly sniff but does not chase, bark, or fixate.
* Far more interested in people, treats, and friendly dogs

Home Life & Daily Behavior

* Comfortable alone for up to 4–6 hours (rarely left fully alone)
* Sleeps on the bed with his foster mom; rests calmly during the day
* No destructive behavior; extremely gentle with belongings
* No barking observed
* Fully potty trained outdoors. Like many male dogs, he may mark when entering a new place or to claim his territory. Using a belly band indoors can help prevent marking.
* Eats well but tends to swallow food quickly and may not chew thoroughly — supervise him with bone treats.

Training & Care

Walks

* Requires a double leash (harness + collar) for safety
* Can startle in new environments or with loud noises
* Walks improve after warming up and settling.
* Curious about street food, and should be monitored

Car Rides

* Enjoys car rides once settled.
* Must be prevented from jumping out when doors open
* Prefers a car seat over a carrier
* No motion sickness observed

Grooming

* Exceptionally gentle and cooperative
* Allows baths, drying, nail care, and tooth brushing
* May appear nervous but remains calm and compliant.

Crate Training: Crate training is ongoing.

Health & Preventatives

* Healthy
* No known allergies
* Monthly NexGard Spectra on the 20th
* Diet: NOW Fresh Grain-Free Small Breed Puppy
* Enjoys chicken, beef, and duck neck chews (supervised due to swallowing tendency)

Hangwa will thrive with adopters who are:

* Calm, patient, and experienced with shy or sensitive dogs
* Willing to allow him time and space to build confidence
* Gentle and consistent with routines
* Committed to double-leash safety during transitions
* Able to provide quiet walks and gradual socialization

He would do well as:

* A solo dog with attentive adopters, or
* A home with one gentle, friendly dog

Not a Good Fit For

* Loud, chaotic, or high-energy households
* First-time dog owners without experience with fearful or shy dogs
* Families expecting an immediately outgoing puppy

From His Foster

“Hangwa is shy at first, but once he opens his heart, he follows you everywhere. He is soft, sensitive, obedient, and incredibly sweet. He just needs a gentle family who understands that his trust is precious — and once he gives it, he gives it fully.”
