Gracie's Story

We have a small female Sheltie-mini poodle who is ready for adoption. She is one of 4 puppies that were abandoned by a neglectful rural back-yard breeder. Initially the pups weren't socialized and were fearful of strangers. We have had the pups for over 2 months and our fosters have been doing an excellent job socializing them with people and other dogs. Gracie can sometimes still be a little hesitant to meet new people – treats and a little time, and she’ll become sweet and friendly. Because Gracie can initially be fearful of new experiences/people reaching for her, we recommend a quiet adult home for her. She has settled in nicely in her current adult foster home. She will need someone that can keep up with her, and provide regular exercise. A fenced yard and another playful dog would be a good start. She enjoys playing with the other dogs in her foster home, and would greatly benefit having another dog in her new home. Gracie is so athletic that she can do the high jump (she can clear a 3 ft baby gate in the house, and climb a chain link fence that is 4 ft) so you need to keep her on a long lead and stay outside with her or have a wooden fence that she can’t climb. Gracie is 7 months old, and weighs only 14.7#, but she can keep up with anyone that walks briskly. Because she barks at cats it might be best if there weren’t any felines inside the house. Housebreaking is coming along well – if she gets out first thing in the morning, just before bedtime, and after meals, she will be accident free; allow for a couple possible accidents as she transitions to a new routine. Gracie is smart, and she’ll learn fast.
She is kenneled when left (about 4 hr) and overnight. It wouldn’t be fair to a puppy to crate them all day and again all night, so she wouldn’t be a match for someone that works outside their home. Tennis balls are a big hit to play with. She will also need approved chew toys. Gracie likes attention – she’ll sit in your lap and snuggle. Haven’t noticed any playbiting with adults. Not a big barker – corrects/stops easily. Hasn’t learned any commands, doesn't have any recall yet and needs leash training .
Gracie has been spayed, and has healed nicely from her surgery. Now she's ready for a family of her own. Having another playful same-size dog in her new home would be a perfect match – to be her companion, mentor and playmate.. Someone should ideally be around the house much of the time to continue the potty training, and teach her what is and what isn't appropriate to chew on. If you haven't had a puppy for a while.......remember how active a puppy is, how much play/exercise they need, that chewing stage they will go through, and the benefits of the basic obedience classes you should enroll them in. She is going to be with you for another 12-15 years, and will need grooming several times a year - an ongoing expense to consider. Gracie has been wormed, has had 3 distemper shots and a 1 yr rabies vaccination. A microchip was inserted at the time of surgery.

Gracie has a $500 adoption fee. Call 651-771-5662 if you have questions or would like to meet her.
