Gordy's Story

Oh Gordy… where to begin.

Back in January, we humanely trapped Gordy after he and his girlfriend, Mama Mia, were abandoned in a local office parking lot. Mama Mia was extremely pregnant, so volunteers safely scooped her up first. A few hours later, they returned for Gordy, who was too scared and insecure to allow a leash.

Gordy is a complicated, loving, and hilarious little dog. When meeting new people, he can be a bit growly and snippy—but give him a day or two, and he transforms into the biggest lap dog you’ve ever met. He is incredibly affectionate and loves deeply once he feels safe.

Gordy and Mama Mia are the best of friends, and we would love to see them adopted together. However, we know they will also do just fine separately. Gordy is a dachshund, and true to the breed, he has that wonderfully quirky, snarky personality that so many people adore.

He is a volunteer favorite. Gordy walks great on a leash, loves car rides, and is both affectionate and protective. He makes an excellent little watchdog and will always investigate any new sound. That said, he is still an insecure guy. He is especially nervous around men at first—he may bark and shake when they enter his space—but with patience, he does warm up. With women, he connects quickly and becomes an absolute lovebug, offering kisses, lap time, and soulful eye contact.

Gordy is truly a character and will make a wonderful companion for someone who understands that he just needs a little time to build confidence and feel secure. He does well with female dogs but is mostly focused on human affection. He would thrive in a home where he can be close to his people—maybe with another dog (no cats, please!)—and, of course, enjoy plenty of lap time. We think he would be wonderful with older kids (smaller too, just needs to be introduced). Gordy is about 3 years old and is 25lbs.

If you’re interested in adopting Gordy ($200 donation), please take a moment to fill out an application at : Application - povertyspets.org . Once received, you will be contacted within 72 hours.
