Gidget's Story

Introducing Gidget, the perfect fall puppy. She’s a 3-month-old Great Pyrenees mix dressed in white and gold with little speckles all over her, as though someone set her down beside a pile of autumn leaves and let the season finish decorating her. She came to us from the shelter, which, considering how cute she is...is quite hard to believe. Gidget is sweet like the first sip of a pumpkin spice latte, only considerably less likely to cost seven dollars. She’s gentle as a leaf drifting onto your porch, easygoing as a Sunday afternoon in October, and fluffy enough to make your favorite sweater feel insecure. She has the sort of face that could persuade you to cancel plans, light a candle, and spend the day telling a puppy how pretty she is. A perfectly reasonable use of your time, according to Gidget.

Apply to adopt Gidget:
https://www.pyrpawsandfluffytailsrescue.com/adoption-app

Gidget is being fostered in Skiatook, OK. Her adopter must personally pick her up there. We do not transport.

Gidget’s social calendar is pleasantly uncomplicated. She likes other dogs, follows them around, and joins in gentle play. She would likely love a canine friend in her forever home—someone to show her the household routine and participate in the occasional very polite puppy game. She’s also met her foster family’s cat. Gidget is curious, but respectful, which is wise when the smallest animal in the house carries knives on its feet and acts like it owns the deed. She has done well with the teenagers in her foster home. Her foster thinks Gidget’s gentle nature could make her a lovely companion for younger children, too, though she hasn’t spent time with little kids yet. When she meets new people, she gives a soft tail wag and waits to see what they think of her. Pick her up, and she cuddles right in. Apparently her strategy is to let you believe you’re making the first move, then immediately become indispensable.

At about a 4 out of 10 on the energy scale, Gidget is happy to play without turning every afternoon into a live sporting event. She likes toys, enjoys water, and is curious about whatever her people are doing. Fetch has not won her over. You threw the toy; she trusts you had your reasons. Whether the day calls for hanging out at home, spending time with dog friends, or heading somewhere new, she’s content to be included. Gidget hasn’t gone on walks yet. Her foster plans to introduce them after her second vaccine, so her new family will get to help her learn about leashes, sidewalks, and the truly astonishing number of things worth sniffing. She does already ride well in the car. She needs help getting in because she’s a three-month-old puppy, not a pole vaulter, but once aboard, she likes to lie beside someone and enjoy the ride.

She has shown no food guarding, resource guarding, particular fears, escape attempts, or other mischievous habits in her foster home. She’s generally quiet, too. At first, she barked a couple of times when her foster put her in her puppy area before leaving, but she adjusted and no longer does that. She seems to reserve most of her energy for being sweet, which is clearly a demanding occupation. Her potty habits have been impressive for such a young puppy: no accidents in her foster home so far! Her foster stops short of calling her fully potty trained, and Gidget will need patience and a consistent routine while learning the rules in a new home. She doesn’t know commands yet, either, so her family can teach her the basics from the beginning. Luckily, she has already mastered “look adorable while a human explains something,” which should make training sessions very entertaining. Gidget eats in a kennel and stays there for about 20 minutes afterward so she can get used to it. When her foster family is away, she stays in a puppy area in the sunroom. At night, she sleeps with her foster family. Her foster would probably tell you this arrangement was carefully considered, but we suspect Gidget looked at the bed, looked at the humans, and allowed them to reach the obvious conclusion. She’s allowed on the couch as well, because apparently this entire home has surrendered to a speckled marshmallow.

She hasn’t been chewing things she shouldn’t, but she is still a puppy. Her future family should be ready for continued training, appropriate chew toys, and the possibility that adolescence may eventually introduce her to ideas she hasn’t had yet. For now, she has been an easy, gentle little houseguest. Gidget could fit into many kinds of loving homes. A securely fenced yard would be lovely for playtime, but her foster feels she could also do well in an apartment or a home without a fence, provided she gets regular walks when she’s ready, playtime, and plenty of time with her people. Another dog would be a welcome friend, but what she needs most is a family who will include her, love her, and keep guiding her as she grows.Gidget may have the colors of fall, but her sweet little heart is built for every season. She’s the puppy who will quietly follow a dog friend around, curl up beside you in the car, and make herself at home next to you at the end of the day.
