Gibson's Story

***PLEASE READ ENTIRE PROFILE DESCRIPTION BEFORE APPLYING! We spend a LOT of time getting to know our rescues and formulating their profiles to be as detailed as possible, in order to encourage only the most well-fitting adoptive homes to apply. If Gibson is still listed here, he is still available and looking for his furever home! Thank you! ***

If you’re looking for a BEAUTIFUL, purebred, AKC registered, HUGE male Doberman with a docked tail but lovely natural ears, look no further. Gibson is a stunning 8-month-old AKC black and rust Doberman male who is looking for a forever home who will give him a job to do and a warm bed to snuggle in!

Gibson was bought as a puppy by a loving family with all the best intentions. However, their housing situation changed from an apartment to a small camper, and they also found themselves over their heads with an intact working breed that couldn’t work. As a result, Gibson has spent most of his young life crated in order to avoid knocking over the 2 very small children in the tiny confines of the camper. He didn’t have an outlet for his Doberman energy, which created a Catch 22. He needed to be let out to burn energy, but every time they let him out, his energy was too overwhelming so he had to be crated again. On top of that, he wasn’t neutered, so his energy was off the charts.

After 6 months, they’ve realized he needs and deserves a better life, and made the hard, responsible decision to let us find a great home for him. While Freddie’s Felines normally focuses on cats, we do take in dogs occasionally, so we had to help them out!

Up front: Gibson is not a good fit for a first time Doberman owner or first time working breed owner. He needs an experienced hand and someone able to provide proper training and working ability. While he IS a great pet as well, he needs extensive training to reach his full potential and live a happy life (and have happy owners!).

If you’d like a dog to add to your working program, want a dog for agility, OR a dog you can do Schutzhund/bitework with, Gibson is a PERFECT candidate. He is strong, athletic, very active, already has the inclination to be mouth-oriented, and while he hasn’t had much training yet, he is a sponge and responds very positively when taught and corrected by a firm but level/stable authority figure. This dog desperately seeks to please, and just needs someone willing and able to teach him and give him a job. Once he has gone through basic and advanced obedience and some basic work training, he will be a DREAM dog.

Gibson is also a really sweet dog who, like all Dobermans, is very people-oriented and just wants to be where his humans are. Once he settles down, he loves to do the Dober-lean against you and get petted and hugged, and will lay at your feet. He enjoys playing with different toys and balls, but primarily ones that involve his person rather than playing by himself. He wants to be part of everything!

He is mostly housebroken and will whine/bark when he needs to go outside. However, given that he has been crated most of his life and has only lived in a very small camper, he will likely need to go through some basic housetraining as he’s never been in an actual house with much more space. He is very smart and will catch on easily.

Gibson has grown up with 2 children and LOVES them. However, I would recommend a home with older children 8+ (or no children) as he is very large, heavy, and strong, and until he gets some training underway and a job to burn his physical and mental energy, he tends to be very jumpy, paws/scratches, mouths at hands and arms, and is essentially a bull in a china shop. That said, I would consider a home with small children if they have extensive experience with large working breeds, have appropriate containment and handling, and plan to be actively training and working him. This would be a case by case basis.

He hasn’t spent a ton of time with other dogs so his dog manners are very rusty. However, he has never shown any canine aggression, mainly is either curious and wants to play, or is aversive/shy. Any interested adopters with dogs already in the home will need to bring them by for a meet and greet first.

He did grow up with cats though and generally ignores them as they scare him a bit, although chasing is sometimes on his agenda since he had no energy outlet. With proper training and an energy outlet every day, he would be just fine living in a home with dog-accustomed cats.

————————————————————————

All adoptions require an approved application, and a home visit upon approval when your new family member is delivered. For homes further away who plan to pick up their new baby, a Facetime home visit is required!

Gibson is AKC registered and will come with that registration which can be transferred to the new owner’s name.

He is currently intact and we would consider adopting him out that way ONLY to an approved working dog program in a police department or similar. Otherwise he will be neutered prior to adoption, no exceptions.

He is UTD on all vaccines, has been dewormed, tested negative for heartworm and kept UTD on heartworm/flea/tick prevention.

If you are interested in adopting Gibson, please email FreddiesFelines@gmail.com and we will send you our canine application.

Adoption Fee: $300
