Gianna's Story

Hi, I'm Gianna and I'm new to the rescue. I am currently decompressing and getting used to my foster family. Check back as my foster family learns more about me!

Dog's Name: Gianna
Location: Plano, IL
Date of Birth: 04/18/2023 (Approximately)
Gender: Female
Breed: Presa Canario
Color: Brindle
Dog's Weight: 85

Gets along with:

Dogs?: Per the shelter she was rescued from, yes.
Cats?: Unknown
Kids?: Unknown

Training:

Potty trained: Indicates a need to potty and doesn't have indoor accidents
Car: Rides Well in car

Meet Gianna

Gianna is a sweet, resilient young girl estimated to be about 3–4 years old who is just beginning to learn what a safe, stable life looks like. She was found as a stray in Chicago and is smaller in size compared to most dogs of her breed. She will benefit from gaining some weight to reach a healthier condition. She has been through a lot prior to coming into care, including likely overbreeding. She has significant extra skin on her belly that will be evaluated for possible surgical options, as it is causing hygiene challenges.

At her core, Gianna is very affectionate with people and loves attention. She enjoys being petted and is quickly learning how to relax and accept affection, though she is still figuring out personal space. She is very people-oriented and likes to stay close to her handler, which also makes her recall to come inside and outside quite strong. She is highly food motivated and also enjoys toys, which will be helpful as she continues her training journey.

Because of her current hormonal state and reactivity, she has not been fully introduced to other dogs and has shown lunging at gates when seeing them. She is also not yet cat-tested or kid-tested, so slow, controlled introductions will be essential once she is stabilized. She does not currently enjoy going into her crate, but once inside she settles calmly without barking or distress.

Gianna is still a work in progress and will thrive with consistency, structure, and gentle guidance. She is learning boundaries, confidence, and how to navigate the world appropriately, and she is already showing that she is smart and food-motivated enough to make progress quickly with the right support.

Gianna will do best with an experienced adopter who is comfortable working through training challenges like resource guarding, impulse control, and reactivity. A calm, structured environment with patience and consistency will be key. At this stage, it is still being determined whether she would do best as an only dog or could eventually live with others after proper introductions and stabilization. A fenced yard may be helpful but is not a strict requirement if she has committed leash walks and enrichment. She is likely not ideal for a first-time giant breed owner due to her current behavioral and medical complexities, but she has strong potential with the right guidance and time.

Until the profile is removed from the public's view, this dog is considered available for adoption.
