Gertie's Story

Gertie now an adult of the age of aprox 3-4 yrs old. She was dumped when she was a puppy younger than 6 months old on the streets. She was then scared to death and abused by the places she would try and get trash to eat. Rocks thrown at her and shot at. Dogs on streets attacking her. For two years people tried to catch her or trap her but she was street smart by then after two years running the streets to survive she learned trust no one because they will hurt you and fail you.
She would go on to then be hit by a car and the person did not stop. But lucky for this scared feral girl that the people behind them an senior couple did stop. They had blankets inside their car they carry for those emergencies and wow did that come into play. They together got the covers over and around her and carried her screaming body into the vets office and told them of the dog and what had happened. Animal control wanted to take her and pts but the vets office owner said NO. He took her and did surgery on her broken pelvis and leg and spayed her at the same time. He then kept her for over 6-8 months in his office allowing her to heal and interact with people trying to pull her from her shell. She came out a degree where he could touch her and walk into her but she was not doing great in that busy of a place. That is when we were approached and asked if we could help her. Her name was just "girl" there. We wanted to give her a name and therefore the name Gertie came to me. Which she knows well now.
I proceeded to take her in and while we are miles further than day one she still needs the dedication of someone that has hours that they can devote one on one with her.
Lets discuss her a little more in detail so anyone still reading can decide if this girl is a special girl they would love to sink their love and time into. We I realize all can not even when the heart strings pull.
Gertie is not a trusting dog. She has no offer to bite. Hers is retreat far away. She is a dog that will absolutely have to be walked on a leash. If you let her outside in a yard you can not walk up to her and get her. Maybe much later down the line. She is a dog that can never be outside of a yard off leash. This is not optional so this is not a dog for you if that is what you think. She would take off and that would be it you would never get her back. This will not be anything we would agree to or would allow.
She will allow me to love on her and she will lick my hand and have gotten a kiss a couple times. She will eat yummy stuff from my hands. She will let me pet her and look at her feet and ears teeth but so far I am that one person she trust. We allow her to go out into a smaller section of yard with a high fence (6ft) tall and she will potty and come back to the door. But this is a much smaller section of a huge yard that we have set up for this purpose.
Now let me tell you what we hope for.
I believe that the right person is out there. Be it an older person whom is retired or a person who works from home or someone that is home a lot of the day and has the dedication for a girl that needs someone to devote their love to. She would do fine with a couple or single person. I think small kids would be to much for her. Little kids little hands loud interaction. I am not sure she is ready for this. But I will not rule out your family if you are the right family but absolutely do not feel like small toddler children would be a fit at all for her.
Ideally she needs someone that has no pets that is looking to heal a soul or carrying on the healing of a broken soul. She wants to trust and love and most of all she wants to be loved. She wants to love someone with out a doubt. We do have our moments when she will take the extra kiss and lay her head in my hand when I am petting her. There is a hurt child/pup inside that body that is looking for someone to not give up on her and allow her in a home of her very own to be her. To learn to trust and know she is safe and never to be hurt or abandoned again,
I pray each day for that person or couple and home to come along. I know that there is someone out their that has a lot to give that maybe they have lost and been hurt that needs a furry partner to heal with and for.
If you fit any of this please reach out and lets talk and see if you are that person for this girl. Gertie is going to change someone's life and they will change hers.
