Gala's Story

The MexiMutt Project is an initiative of Born Again Pit Bull Rescue. Millions of dogs live on the streets in Mexico, and our rescue works at the source through spay/neuter programs, rescue, medical care, and adoption into loving homes.
- Since 2019, we have matched over 500 dogs with loving homes & spayed/neutered over 3,500 dogs in Mexico.
- All of our dogs are currently in foster care in Guadalajara, Mexico. They are listed in Oregon for adoption purposes because our rescue is based there.
- Once an adoption is approved, the dog will fly to Portland, Oregon (PDX). Most dogs arrive within 2-4 weeks after approval, depending on flight availability.

INTERESTED IN ADOPTING? Please fill out an application at: www.bapbr.org/apply
(We are unable to respond to adoption inquiries submitted through Petfinder)

**************************
Meet GALA
- AGE: 9 months old (estimated)
- WEIGHT: 31 lbs
- GOOD WITH KIDS who know to respect a dog's space and belongings.
- HOUSEBROKEN? Not 100% yet. As rescues that lived outdoors, they'll need some time to adjust. Most adapt within 1-2 weeks of consistent training.
- The breed listed is our best guess (since they're rescues!)

For weeks, a small shape kept turning up after dark in downtown Chapala, digging through trash bins for anything to eat. She wasn't a neighborhood dog, nobody recognized her, and it looked like she'd only recently been dumped there. Then one morning, a scared, in-heat girl showed up outside the door, and it turned out to be Gala's little sister. That's how her rescuer found her.

It took patience to earn her trust: food set out night after night, a little closer to the house each time, until the puppy who used to bolt at the sight of a hand finally let someone near enough to catch her. She was spayed before her first heat, around six months old, then released again once she'd healed. Not long after, she was hit by a car. Her rescuer brought her back in for treatment and medication, and this time, Gala never wandered far again.

"She was a skinny, frightened puppy who'd only come out at night," her foster, Rosa Lilia, remembers. "Even trying to feed her, she'd run." That dog is gone now. In her place is a puppy who leans into every hug, follows her people from room to room, and lights up the second anyone sits down near her. "She's so affectionate, so attached to people, and so pretty now," Rosa Lilia says, and it shows: her beautiful hazel eyes, once dull and sad, are the first thing people notice about her.

Gala is a homebody at heart. She's calm around the house, already potty trained, and just as happy curled up with a person as she is playing with the other dogs. She does have a slight limp in one leg, nothing that seems to bother her or slow her down, just a small souvenir of what she's been through. She's wonderful with kids and gets along well with other dogs, and while she hasn't spent much time around cats, she's shown no trouble tolerating them either.

What Gala wants most is simple: to belong somewhere, to someone, for good. She's already spent her short life fighting just to stay close to whoever would care for her. Are you ready to be the home she finally stops having to hold onto so tightly?

*************************
Ready to apply?
