Gabriel's Story

Yes, as long as they're taught to respect the dog’s belongings and boundaries.

• HOUSEBROKEN? Not 100% yet. As rescues that lived on the street or tile/outdoor surfaces, they'll need some time to adjust. Most of our dogs adapt within 1-2 weeks of consistent training.

Gabriel’s story began in one of the most dangerous places imaginable. A volunteer first spotted him wandering through a construction zone in the median of a busy highway in Guadalajara, with cars rushing past on both sides and no safe way out. She tried to stop that day but could not safely reach him through the traffic.

Two days later she drove the same route again and saw him still there. Gabriel had likely been trapped in that highway median for at least 48 hours in the scorching heat without food or water.

This time she found a way across. Gabriel was terrified and would not come near her, so it took her and several construction workers working together to safely bring him to safety.

Once home, the extent of his condition became clear. His ribs and hip bones showed through his fur and he was completely exhausted. When food was placed in front of him he ate as if he had not seen a meal in days. That first night he kept his distance, quietly watching from across the room, unsure of what was happening.

By the next morning, everything began to change.

Within 24 hours of being rescued, Gabriel started nudging his foster’s hand for pets, following her through the apartment, and curling up beside her on the couch. Once he realized he was safe, his affectionate personality quickly came through.

Over the months since his rescue, Gabriel has continued to grow into a loving and devoted companion. He enjoys his walks and exploring the world now that he is no longer facing it alone. His favorite place, however, is simply wherever his person is. He is happiest relaxing beside you, resting his head on your lap, and quietly keeping you company.

Gabriel is a gentle, loyal dog who bonds deeply with his person. Because of his past, he can be sensitive to loud voices and stressful environments. Yelling can make him nervous, and he may bark when new people enter the home. When given space and allowed to approach on his own terms, he quickly relaxes and warms up.

He would do best in a calm, quiet home without young children or highly anxious dogs. Gabriel thrives in a peaceful environment where he can feel safe and secure. In foster care he struggled around a dog that was constantly anxious, so a stable and relaxed household will help him feel his best.

Gabriel is affectionate without being overwhelming. He loves to be near his person but is also happy to quietly relax by your side.

And that little overbite gives him a unique and charming expression. He may look a bit serious in photos, but anyone who spends a few minutes with Gabriel quickly falls in love with him.

After everything he has been through, Gabriel is ready for a stable home where he can feel safe, loved, and understood. He has already shown how quickly he can trust when someone shows him kindness.

Now he is simply waiting for the person who will give him the forever home he deserves.

*************************

📝 Ready to apply?
