Fresca's Story

Fresca was one of several dogs we rescued from a deplorable hoarding/breeding situation.

Fresca is a male, approximately 2yo, UTD, neutered Shih Tzu mix. He has Alopecia so some of his hair is very thin or not there at all, but he is still cute. This little guy is a good eater, loves his toys, and loves to sleep in the bed. He is working on housebreaking, but is far from perfect. He has one terrible habit his foster hasn’t been able to break yet; after eating, he immediately turns around and tinkles on his bowl. If he is being fed in an area with another dog, he will tinkle on that bowl too. No matter how fast his foster tries to get him outside after eating or move the bowl, he is faster. We changed his bowls, changed locations, fed him alone, and sterilized the area and nothing seemed to change the behavior. Because he came from a hoarding-type situation, this is likely a territorial action that may or may not subside.

Fresca is adorable, but EXTREMELY shy. We have had him in foster care for several months now and the foster family has yet to actually touch him. He hangs out near people and even gently/happily jumps up on their legs when it's feeding time, but if you reach for him, he darts away. He likes to sleep in a doggie bed on a human bed, and may even curl up next to you, but if you move or accidentally touch him, he runs off. He may even jump up to sit on your lap to watch TV, but if you move, he jumps off. Every once in a while, Fresca will poke his fosters with his nose. It is a friendly “boop”, but he still will not allow his fosters to touch him. He does get excited and wags his tail often, so it isn’t all bad, but it is very sad how scared he is of humans

This guy gets along with quiet dogs of all sizes and pays no attention to the cats. He really loves having a K9 buddy. He sticks to other dogs like glue in his foster home. Particularly the females. They help him with his confidence and he really enjoys cuddling with them. He doesn’t like when other dogs get in his face and he will protect his food.

Fresca is going to need a fenced yard, because getting a harness and leash on him is impossible at this point. A quiet, lower-energy home will be best for this guy to help him come out of his shell. He can be gently cornered into a wire crate to go to the vet. When he went to our vet, he needed to be muzzled for treatment, but he was manageable.

We are looking for very special adopters for this guy. Very special. Is this you? Applications can be found on our website www.homesfurhounds.org

Homes Fur Hounds, Inc.'s Adoption Policy
1. Once you have identified the dog(s) you are interested in meeting, you must submit an Adoption Application. You can find the application at https://www.homesfurhounds.org 2. Be patient. We occasionally have a high volume of applications, especially on puppies. 3. If your application is approved you will be contacted to arrange a meet and greet with the dog(s) you are interested in meeting. Whenever we have more than one applicant who is approved, we set up the meet and greet in the order in which the applications were received. 4. We are a small rescue group and do require home checks. Therefore, we only adopt to VA, NC and MD. Exceptions are made for medically needy or seniors if no qualified applicant is located in our adoption area. 5. We do keep applications on file for 6 months, so even if you aren’t selected for a particular dog, if you see another dog of interest, let us know and we will consider your application at that time. 6. Please don’t be offended if you are not selected to adopt. We try to match the dog with the BEST home for them. Just because you weren’t selected for a specific dog does not mean you can’t apply for another one. 7. Our adoption fee is $300.00.
