Frederick's Story

For Adoption: Frederick!
Please read our dog bios carefully to be sure that the dog you are applying for suits your family and lifestyle.
We at PDR believe in the benefits of post-adoption training for our dogs and their families. This allows
for continued socialization, learning and helps to create a well-mannered and balanced dog. Post-adoption training is a requirement in our adoption process.
To apply for adoption and for more information on our process and requirements, visit our website at https://pounddog.ca/adoption-info/.
Frederick is a very loving fluffy dog who is looking for someone to snuggle with and go for gentle walks with. This cutie is a 4yr old Bichon Frise boy who weighs about 11lbs.
Frederick came from a puppy mill where he was used for breeding. He is a very resilient dog but he will still need a calm and quiet home. He needs someone who will continue to work on his training and provide him with daily walks even though he is happy to spend time snuggling on the couch. Puppy mill dogs are sensitive to sudden noises or movement. He has gotten used to loud appliances like vacuums and blenders.
Frederick needs a calm home to be able to thrive. He is used to wanting a soft place to lie down and rest. He is a cuddle bug but he still needs to go for daily walks. He will have zoomies when excited and has been trying to get into mischief a little bit more. He doesn’t destroy anything but he has his favourite items to pull out and steal. He has taken to leash walking very well. He doesn’t like to go particularly fast and has no issues pulling. He will need someone to keep working on his confidence. He has never shown reactivity towards other dogs but will try to say hi to every human who walks by. Frederick is a very social boy who loves peoole.
Frederick is a silly little guy who will do laps around the coffee table excitedly. He gets very happy to see his foster parents. He is doing more exploring of the world around him and coming out of his shell. He has also gotten so comfortable that he will lie on his back and show his tummy or snuggle up to one of his foster parents. He continues to get more used to the hairbrush but it is still not his favourite activity. He will need someone to keep up with regular brushing and trimming the hair around his eyes. He is mostly patient with this but it is definitely not his favourite thing. Frederick’s biggest learning curve was around marking in the house. For the first week in his foster home, he was marking very frequently by peeing on the side of the couch or the table. Through consistent monitoring and training as well as him being neutered, this has been managed. He may revert back to this behaviour when in a new home and may need more training for it again. Now he has more freedom in the home and does not have accidents outside of his crate. He is still working on holding it through the night. Frederick is crate trained and sleeps there during the night. He is also left in his crate for a few hours a day to keep him safe and out of trouble. He will cry/howl for the first twenty minutes or so during the night, but he settles down and goes to sleep. He feels safe eating his meals when he is in his crate. He travels in a crate as well and does well on car rides. He typically will lie down in his crate during the drive and does not make any noise.
Frederick is currently staying with a cat and other dogs. He does not show much interest in the cat other than the odd sniff. He has never shown any prey drive. He likes to snuggle up to the other dogs but he can get jealous when he is not getting as much attention. Frederick would be okay with a fur sibling but he could also go to a home with no pets. He looks to humans for guidance and attention more than the other dogs. He will walk by other dogs and small animals with no reaction. He would be quite happy as the only pet in the home and getting all of the attention.
Frederick has only met one child while at a meet and greet event. He was fine with the child as she was quite gentle with him. He would likely benefit from being in a home where the children are a bit older, over 10yrs,m so there is less noise and only if the children are dog savvy. As a mill dog still learning about the world outside of a barn, sudden noises, loud voices, or excitable actions startle him. He would prefer an adult only home that has little fuss and is a peaceful envfironment.
Frederick’s training has mostly been around walking well, knowing how to “leave it”, come, and sit. He is a smart dog who picks things up well. He is also very eager to please. Ongoing training will help him continue to flourish and build confidence. He will need ongoing training in his new home.
Frederick has gone to the vet for examination, vaccines, and neutering. His only concern was a mild ear infection which was treated and hair growth in the ears. The vet explained that some dogs have hair growing too much inside of their ears which can make them more infection prone. The vet removed the excess hair but warned that this might be something that needs to happen again in the future. He did well at the vet and everyone fell in love with him there.
Even though he is a cuddle bug, he will need an owner who will challenge him with training and give him daily exercise. He is only starting on his journey of confidence building and socialization. It was only a few weeks ago that he was in a puppy mill, never having seen the outside world. There is a lot to learn and a lot to adjust to, but this little guy is up for the task! He is looking for his best friend who will love a cuddly little guy with bursts of playful energy.

Name: Frederick
ID # PDR1481
Age: 4yrs
Gender: male
Neutered: yes
UTD vaccines: yes
Breed: Bichon Frise
Colours: white
Coat length: med
House trained: yes
Special needs: no
OK with kids: older
OK with cats: yes
Ok with dogs: yes
Status: adoptable
Microchip: yes
Size: small
Location: Kitchener
Adoption fee: $700
