Flossy - Free Training Support for 6 Months's Story

Meet Flossy

Can you imagine spending seven years bringing life into the world, litter after litter, puppy after puppy, never once having someone love you back? Never having a soft bed that was yours, a person who was yours, a moment that was simply and completely yours? That was Flossy's life. Seven years as a breeding mom, giving everything and receiving so little in return.

She is done with that chapter now. And the dog emerging on the other side of it is something truly worth knowing.

Flossy is seven years old and she is learning, one careful step at a time, that humans can be kind and safe. She never learned that before and so she is taking nothing for granted. She tends to warm more naturally to men and has a special fondness for her foster dad, which makes complete sense for a girl who spent her life in circumstances that gave her little reason to trust. Her foster mom does everything for her and Flossy is still working on fully letting her in, which is a good reminder that love on Flossy's terms is the only kind that counts and it is worth every moment of patience it requires.

She is sweet and gentle and has a quiet affection that reveals itself in her own time and in her own way. She loves to be close to her people, curled up on the couch or tucked into a bed beside someone she trusts. She can use a crate but she is happiest when she has the freedom to roam and choose her own spot, which is usually as close to her humans as she can get on her own terms. She does an absolutely adorable little circle dance at mealtimes and takes treats with the most gentle softness you have ever felt. She is in there, warm and loving and real, and she is coming forward more every day.
She does need to be approached with warning and care, particularly when being picked up. She is learning that hands that reach for her mean safety and kindness, but that is a new concept for Flossy and she needs a home that will honor that with patience and consistency.

Flossy is on anxiety medication as she works through the big feelings that come with a life like hers. She needs a secure fence without exception as she is a flight risk outdoors. She thrives in a quiet home away from city noise, quick movements, and the unpredictability of young children. A confident and gentle dog companion in the home would help her feel more settled and secure.

She needs an experienced and deeply patient adopter who understands that some dogs arrive already loving you, and some dogs arrive having to learn what love even is. Flossy is the second kind. And the person who earns her trust is going to receive something extraordinary in return.

She spent 7 years giving everything she had to a world that gave her very little back. She deserves a home that changes that completely and forever.

Operation Paws for Homes's Adoption Policy
Our organization provides pet adoption services to families located in Virginia, Washington DC, Maryland, Southern Pennsylvania and neighboring states. We believe in responsible adoptions and strive to work with each adopter to find a good match for their home and lifestyle. Our adoption process includes completion of an application, a vet check, an interview, and a personal “meet and greet” where the family can meet and interact with their potential new four-legged family member. Throughout this process, we work to ensure each family and dog are the right fit for each other. We are fortunate to have some wonderful and active volunteers who help OPH find forever homes for over 1,000 dogs and cats a year. The key to that statement is - volunteer! Please remember that our organization is driven by caring individuals who give their personal time to help rescue these animals and provide them with the opportunity to find an amazing future! In addition to adoptions, volunteers carry out education and outreach events throughout the area, and conduct donation drives for our partner shelters in the south. Our goal is to offer a second chance to dogs and cats abandoned in shelters and out of time. Sadly, without our help, some of these adoptable animals would face almost certain euthanasia - sometimes within days of arriving at the shelter. Each year we rescue hundreds of wonderful dogs and cats. We work hard to unite them with forever families who will give them the life and love they deserve. These animals are saved only because of the dedication of our incredible adopters, fosters, donors, and volunteers.
