Finn's Story

Meet Finn!

This handsome golden retriever came to us by way of Hitchcock Road Animal Services where he was turned in as a stray and no one came to claim him. We can't believe he wasn't missed because he is an extremely sweet and loving boy!

Now, Finn has a lot of love to share...so much that he really doesn't understand the concept of personal space! He really is the definition of a Velcro dog. He loves people and he can't seem to get close enough to those he likes best. He has a hard time controlling his licker and if you get too close, be prepared for a sloppy, wet kiss (or three!). In his foster home, he has proven himself to be potty trained and doesn't mind going into his crate when his foster is away from the home. He also walks extremely well on a leash and is not reactive when passing or meeting other dogs. He is a true cuddle bug and loves getting a good belly rub.

We don't know Finn's life before he came to us, but it's pretty clear that training was not a high priority in his former home. "Sit" seems to be about the only command that he knows - other basics like "no", "off" and "stay" are foreign to him...which means that the first few days with this sweet boy can be a little frustrating because he is a bit of a jumper and can also get over-stimulated quickly. When you take that into consideration with the fact that he doesn't understand the words "no" or "stop", he can be a bit of a challenge.

But on the positive side, these are not "bad" traits - these are all things that can be worked on through training. And his foster mom has been working with a trainer already and they have found him to be a very smart guy and fast learner. Since a majority of his "bad manners" are those that can be addressed through training, it will be an adoption requirement that his adopters register him for a basic obedience class as he will be a much better family member with some improved manners.

Finn is being fostered with three canine brothers and while he has done well living with them, his foster mom says he would also thrive in a home as an only dog as he loves being the center of attention. While he will occasionally play with his canine housemates, his favorite place in the foster home is being as close as possible to his foster mom. Finn has, unfortunately, shown a high prey drive and as such, he would not do well in a home with cats or other small animals or livestock. His obsession with squirrels and other outdoor creatures, too, will require a secure yard and he should not be left unattended as he does have an adventurous nature.

Interested in Finn?
