Fergus's Story
Meet Fergus-a ridiculously handsome and dignified red standard dachshund who has all the ladies swooning.

Fergus is a sweet, easygoing boy who gets along perfectly with dogs, cats, children, and grown-ups. He’s affectionate and loves to snuggle, but he isn’t demanding about it—he’s just happy to be near his people and part of the family.

He has excellent manners in the house. Fergus uses a doggy door and has never had an accident in his foster home. He has great recall, walks well, and can even be trusted off leash in appropriate settings. He has been crate trained in the past, although his current foster family hasn’t needed to crate him.

Fergus has done wonderfully with his dachshund foster brothers and enjoys having canine companions. Sadly, he came into rescue after being attacked by the large-breed dogs in his former home when he tried to play with them. His family loved him and made the difficult decision to surrender him because they wanted him to be safe.

Over the past year, Fergus has lost more than 10 pounds with a healthier diet and is now a trim 20 pounds. He enjoys chewing on toys, but isn’t obsessive about them, and like a proper dachshund, he’ll let you know when something interesting is happening at the door or along the fence—without being excessively barky or aggressive. He is the best car companion and won't judge your driving habits.

Fergus was recently diagnosed with Cushing’s disease and is doing very well on medication, which he will need for the rest of his life. He also recently had a bladder stone removed, and a urinary-support diet has been recommended going forward.

Fergus really is the whole package: friendly, house-trained, affectionate, well-mannered, and wonderfully easy to live with. He’s past the puppy chaos and ready to settle right into a home where he can be loved, spoiled, and appreciated for the very good boy he is. It's pretty hard not to fall in love with him.

We may be a little biased, but Fergus is pretty darn close to perfect.

Fergus is currently being fostered in Utah.

Rocky Mountain Dachshund Rescue (RMDR) has foster families in Colorado, Nevada, Utah, Montana, and Wyoming. Please check the dog’s location before your apply to adopt them. You will need to pick them up. RMDR DOES NOT TRANSPORT THE DOG TO YOU or transport them across state lines.

The Colorado Department of Agriculture requires that all dogs entering PACFA-licensed facilities have a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) issued by an accredited veterinarian within 30 days of entry. Dogs over three months of age must also have proof of a current rabies vaccination, including the vaccination date, manufacturer, and serial number listed on the CVI. Puppies must receive parvovirus and distemper vaccinations at least 14 days before entry.

These PACFA requirements may affect the adoption fee. For questions, please email us at contact@rmdr.org.

At RMDR, adoptions are not first-come, first-served—we carefully place each dog in the home that best fits their needs. Applications are usually reviewed within 48 hours. Every RMDR dog is spayed/neutered, microchipped, and current on vaccinations.

If you’d like to be considered, please start our online adoption application here: https://rockymountaindachshundrescue.com/adopt
