Espresso's Story

Espresso joined Mattie's Place from a Quebec shelter when he was surrendered with his sister, Matcha. Their early months of life were not easy, according to the shelter, but they have not held any animosity or carried any baggage with them from the challenges they faced.

Espresso has a date of birth of: October 18, 2025. March 3, 2026 at his last vet appointment, he weighed in at 22.5 KG / 50 POUNDS.

Espresso is the sweetest boy. He will be a bigger boy, presumably, but he still falls behind an average Great Dane size, at his age, by about 15 pounds and is currently the weight of a female at this age. He's currently sitting at about 60-75% of his adult weight. Though he's in his rapid growth phase, I think he'll top out in the 80 - 90 pound range as an adult dog at 18 to 24 months of age.

Espresso will have a neuter, at the cost of Mattie's Place, with my rescue veterinarian in Leslieville, in April 2027. It will be a non negotiable neuter date. Most rescues will neuter prior to adoption, even at his current age or younger. I'm willing to respect that he might advance over 100 pounds and will follow giant breed guidelines for neuters and will compromise to a neuter at 18 months.

DO NOT ... come to me in 2027 challenging his neuter date if you are his successful adopter. His neuter date is what his neuter date is and I absolutely will enforce my adoption contract clauses in a court of law should his adopter try to change dates. So, speak with your lawyers, veterinarians or whomever you feel you need to speak to about an 18 month of age neuter, before applying to adopt Espresso. I am not a push over when it comes to spays|neuters and this is absolutely an extremely fair date. At Espresso's neuter, I will also have a gastropexy completed which will permanently attach his stomach to the right abdominal wall to prevent gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV), commonly known as bloat. This will also be at the cost of Mattie's Place.

Espresso is a gentle and kind dog. He missed out on some early puppy training and socialization, so he does lack some confidence outside and in new settings, but he is an absolute sweet and kind dog and with the support of a professional trainer, post adoption, he will continue to blossom into an amazing adult dog.

An adopter with giant breed experience preferred but not necessary.

Espresso is dog friendly. He is kid friendly, but could easily knock down a small child, so a home with 13+ preferred. He is not cat tested.

Espresso would do best, until he can have some professional training and confidence building, having a Work From Home or home most often adopter, as he can exhibit some separation anxiety if left alone longer than a couple hours.

FROM THE FOSTER:

Espresso is the sweetest, most affectionate little guy who just wants to be close to his people. He’s very much a ā€œvelcro puppyā€ right now and happiest when he’s by your side — he absolutely loves cuddling and will happily rest his head on you, often stretching out with a paw over you like a little hug.

He has the cutest playful personality and honestly reminds me of a baby calf when he gets excited. He loves his stuffy toys and will proudly carry them over to show you, leaning against your legs and wiggling back and forth like he’s showing off his prize — it’s the cutest thing to watch.

Espresso is very friendly and has loved everyone he’s met so far. He greets people with excitement and affection, and has such a gentle, loving nature.

He’s been settling in more each week and gaining more confidence. At first he was unsure about going outside into the backyard on his own, but he’s already starting to explore more independently and is showing great progress.

He is doing really well with potty training and will go to the door to let you know when he needs to go out, which is amazing.

He’s still learning crate training. He’s comfortable resting in the crate for naps when he’s tired, especially with a cozy setup, but like most puppies, he prefers to be close to his people and will thrive with continued consistency and gentle encouragement.

Overall, Espresso is a loving, playful, and incredibly sweet puppy who will make an amazing companion. With continued routine, patience, and lots of love, he’s going to grow into a loyal and affectionate best friend.

----------------------------------------

$875 ADOPTION FEE INCLUDES: spay/neuter, deworming, flea/tick prevention, vaccinations, dentals if needed or any added surgical needed surgical care, food, nose to tail health exam, toys, leash|collar, winter coat (seasonal), poop bags, dishes and 30 days of Trupanion pet insurance with immediate coverage on adoption day for any illness or injury not pre-existing.

----------------------------------------

To note: the above description is relevant to this dog in it's current & previous setting. Home changes & adopter personalities can bring out different behaviours not previously seen.
