Ellsie Rae 126166's Story
Ellsie Rae came to us Heartworm Positive and has received the injectable form of medication to treat her of the heartworms. It has been recommended by our veterinarian that she stay on monthly prevention and treatment for the rest of her life. Heartworms can and often do shorten the life span of our pets, however, with successful treatment she should enjoy a long happy life. She will need to be retested on/around 9/23/25 to confirm treatment was successful. Strict cage rest for a full 30 days after treatment is necessary to prevent further damage/stress to the heart. Cage rest ends on 7/23. This means short 3-5 minute walks on leash for bathroom breaks, no free running/jumping for the entire 30 days.

Meet Ellsie Rae, a senior shepherd mix with a heart full of joy. This sweet and friendly girl loves to cuddle, and she has a playful, goofy side that brings smiles to everyone around her. Despite her age, Ellsie Rae is still energetic and enjoys engaging in fun activities. She is the perfect companion for anyone looking for a loyal friend to share in life's adventures. Adopting Ellsie Rae means welcoming a loving and cheerful spirit into your home, ready to brighten your days. She is eager to find her forever home and fill it with love and laughter.

I’m not a fan of cats, so I would prefer to live in a home without any.

Dogs are usually tested with other dogs their size, and we encourage meet-and-greets with your dog before adoption. Cat tests are available if requested, but they only check for clear aggression. Always be careful when introducing dogs to cats. Advice about dogs living with children is based on behavior like energy level and how the dog handles touch. Young children should never be left alone with dogs, and we cannot guarantee how any dog will behave with kids or other pets. Behavior seen in the shelter is just a snapshot and may change in a home. Dogs come from many backgrounds and may need training, time, and patience. Dogs should not be fed together unless you know they do not guard food. We also suggest learning about a dog's breed or mix to be sure it fits your family. Moving to a new home can be stressful for dogs. Use the Rule of 3 to help them adjust: First 3 days: Dogs may feel scared, tired, overexcited, or not want to eat. First 3 weeks: Dogs start learning routines and may show new behaviors. Keep things calm and avoid busy places. First 3 months: Dogs usually feel settled and more comfortable.
