Duke's Story

Fostered in Pensacola
Fence required!

Meet Duke– Your Oversized Shadow with an Oversized Heart!

If you're looking for a gentle giant who will never leave your side and has enough love to fill the ocean, let us introduce you to Duke, a sweet, soulful Great Dane who's ready to be your devoted best friend. While slightly timid at first, after those first head scratches, he will be glued to your side.

Breed: Great Dane
Age: 5
Weight: 140-160 (but 100% of that is love!)
Personality: Calm, clingy, and completely love-obsessed

If you search up "Velcro Dog" online, Duke's picture will show up. Whether you're cooking dinner, watching TV, or just walking from one room to another—expect this big baby to be right behind or beside you, leaning in for pets and gazing up at you with those giant, soulful eyes.

Despite his size, Duke has a calm and gentle demeanor. He's not here to bounce off the walls—they're here to lean against you, rest his GIANT head in your lap, and soak up every ounce of affection you have to offer. He would happily trade a yard full of toys for a couch, a blanket, and your hand gently scratching their ears. He shows no interest in reactive dogs by the fence or even rowdy play with other dogs.

What Duke Needs:
A home that embraces couch cuddles and constant companionship

Someone who appreciates a dog who follows them like a shadow

Does well with all size dogs as long as there is a slow introduction. However, a dog companion is not a necessity for Duke, as long as he has his person!

Kids? Do they like to pet and give scratches? That is all he asks for!

Did we mention lots of love? Seriously, so much love!

It has been said that in his past he could be an escape artist, but with his foster family he has shown no interest in leaving foster mom or dad's eyesight.

Training: with Duke's timid and low energy body, leash walks are a breeze. Next to no correction is needed. His foster family is working on Sit and Down which he is slowly picking up. If he is doing something you do not want, a quick, but stern, NO is enough to deter him from it. Praise for sitting is his favorite part, although treats are appreciated and taken gently!

Kennel training: His foster family has been kenneling when not home and he does well, although he is hesitant to get in the kennel he loves the treat rewards that come with the kennel. His foster family has not left him out of the kennel while someone is not home.

Whether you're having a great day or a tough one, Duke will be right there—calm, loyal, and quietly reminding you that you’re their whole world.

If you're ready to welcome an affectionate, low-energy snuggle buddy into your life, Duke is ready to fill your home (and heart) with unconditional love.

Duke is neutered, fully vaccinated, and chipped. His adoption fee is $350.

To read over the adoption requirements before applying to adopt Duke, please go to www.nwflgdr.com/adopt.

Please note: NWFLGDR does not transport. All approved adopters are required to pick up the dog in person from his or her foster home.

Our adoption requirements are as follows: 1. All Dogs and Cats in your home MUST be spayed or neutered. We will call your vet to verify this. We allow exceptions in rare medical instances upon verification with your vet only. 2. All Dogs and outdoor Cats in your home MUST be current and have been kept historically up to date on annual vaccinations and monthly (or semiannual) heartworm and flea prevention. We will call your vet to verify this. We allow exceptions to this in rare medical instances upon verification with your vet, ONLY. 3. You must be a minimum of 21 years of age to adopt and be able to prove you're financially able to care for a great dane should a medical emergency arise. 4. You must own the property in which you live or your landlord must be willing to verify that you are allowed to have a Great Dane in your rental home. We check property records.? 5. Our Great Danes require a sturdy fenced in yard, particularly young or active danes. Generally, a six-foot or higher privacy fencing is preferred. In certain circumstances, the Board may waive this requirement depending upon the Dane's personality and temperament. Any such exceptions will solely be at the discretion of the Rescue Board. Under no circumstances will we consider invisible or electric fencing as acceptable. 6. We only adopt Dogs as indoor pets. We will not adopt Dogs to be used as guard dogs or to be kept out-of-doors. 7. A home visit is required for ALL adoptions, without exception. This is not a white-glove inspection, rather it is to ensure that the home is a safe environment for the Great Dane. 8. We do not transport. If you are applying from out of area or out of state, understand that if your application gets approved, you will be expected to pick up the dane in the location that he/she is being fostered. In addition, if the adoption does not work out, it is your responsibility to bring the dane safely back to us. 9. There may be multiple applications for the same Dog. Our Great Danes are placed in the home we believe most suitable for them, based upon their individual needs and temperament. 10. Before applying below, please expect this application process to take about two weeks. If you are applying from out of area or state, please expect a slight delay. It will take us more time to get the home visit set up. At any time, if you have questions about the status of your application, please email the rescue at nwflgdr@gmail.com.
