Donner Shepherd & Border Collie Mix Spanish Fork, UT

Donner is SO MUCH FUN. This 2.5 year old Shepsky loves to play. Food? He loves it. People? He loves them. Cats? Meh. If a cat will run, he will chase.
This boy deserves a loving home. His previous owner passed away which left him looking for people to care for him. Are you his new People?

Training Notes:
February 21, 2024: Treat motivated. Knows sit. Great in the crate. I rarely hear him bark. He is great on the leach. Not shy anymore, will go with anyone. Seems to like people more than other dogs.
April 1, 2024: Donner just got back from the foster home. He was resource guarding the food and door. Did 100% better when foster corrected the behavior:
Trainer's suggestions: "with guests coming over I recommend work on teaching Donner "place" . A same spot in living area. Put him in a sit or down in that designated place every time someone knocks. Reward him for going into place and sit, and correcting any barking. Open door when he's in place, anytime he moves out of place before guests come in close door and repeat. I know you only have him for a little bit longer and this process requires a lot of patience and consistently. This is something that is hard to train at facility so whatever you can work on before bringing him back would be great. If he doesn't pick up "place" quickly try putting on leash, put him in a sit hold leash keeping him next to you so he can't charge. Let guests enter but they ignore him completely. He should calm after a few minutes/ seconds, when he will go into sit or down (submissive state) then you can allow him to approach guests politely. I would even recommend having a treat jar out front when guest come they can get a few on way in. Then when Donner does approach then calmly they can reward him with treat and make it a good experience.
Foster's results: "When I dropped Donner off today I didn't have time to chat. But I did want to let you guys know that his behavior issues I mentioned have improved, especially his behavior with human food. I've been using the command "away" with a pointing gesture and making him leave the area any time I am cooking or someone is eating. He has done incredibly well with this and will walk away and lay down somewhere else. We have had ZERO rushing or growling incidents since we started doing this a week ago! I've been amazed at how quickly he changed his behavior, and I think if he went to a home where he was not fed any human food, it would likely not be an issue again.

His front door behavior has improved a little. He did still growl at someone who came over today, but it was more of an uncertain, quiet growl than the more aggressive growling he's done before, and he was very quick to calm down and greet them in a friendly manner. So long as an adopter is willing to keep working with him on those behaviors, I think he would give up the growling altogether pretty soon."
