Domino's Story

Domino — A Gentle Giant Looking for Someone to Believe in Him

Sometimes the dogs who need us the most are the ones who never got the chance to learn just how wonderful life could be.

Meet Domino, a 3-year-old Great Dane with a story that we wish had started very differently.

Domino originally came into rescue when he was just 6 months old. He was part of a litter of puppies belonging to someone who had intended to breed Great Danes, but instead of giving these babies the care and socialization they needed, they were left in a basement for months and barely fed. When they were rescued, the puppies were emaciated, had been forced to live in their own mess, and had very little human interaction.

That kind of beginning leaves a mark.

Domino has always been a little shy and lacking in confidence, and unfortunately, his first years didn't give him the opportunity to fully overcome that. He was adopted pretty quickly but after a change in his owner's living situation, he was returned to rescue because his family could no longer take a large-breed dog with them.

While it wasn't the ending we had hoped for Domino, we're determined that his next chapter will be different.

Since coming back to rescue, Domino has been showing us that underneath that uncertainty is a really sweet boy who just needs someone willing to give him time.

He tends to take his cues from other dogs, and we've seen an incredible difference when he has a confident canine friend around. At our house, it generally takes him about a week to start showing those beautiful tail wags and his happy-go-lucky personality. Watching him come out of his shell is pretty special.

For Domino, we aren't looking for someone who expects him to walk into their home and immediately be the life of the party. We're looking for a Dane lover with patience, compassion, and a little understanding of the shy giant heart underneath all that Great Dane.

A confident, friendly dog in his new home would be a huge bonus for Domino. He truly seems to learn by watching other dogs and gains confidence when he has a buddy to show him that the world isn't so scary.

Domino isn't asking for perfection. He's asking for someone to believe in him long enough for him to believe in himself.

And we know that person is out there.

If you have experience with Great Danes, understand the patience that a shy dog may require, and would love to help a gentle giant continue becoming the confident, happy dog we know he can be, Domino may be your guy.

His past doesn't define him. It simply explains why he needs you to go a little slower.

Domino will come with two bowls, a collar, a leash, a harness, some food, a toy, and all medical and microchip information. His tax-deductible adoption fee is $400.

Domino’s ideal home is a calm, patient, loving one with someone who understands that trust takes time. A confident, friendly dog would be a wonderful companion for him, helping him feel safe as he settles in and learns that he is finally home.

If you’re ready to give this gentle giant the time, compassion, and steady encouragement he deserves, please apply for Domino by emailing onceuponaprayerrescue@gmail.com with the subject line “Domino.” You’ll receive an auto-reply with our prescreening questions. Could you be the person who helps Domino discover just how wonderful life can be?

Domino has always been a little shy and lacking in confidence, and unfortunately, his first years didn't give him the opportunity to fully overcome that. He was adopted pretty quickly but after a change in his owner's living situation, he was returned to rescue because his family could no longer take a large-breed dog with them.

While it wasn't the ending we had hoped for Domino, we're determined that his next chapter will be different.

Since coming back to rescue, Domino has been showing us that underneath that uncertainty is a really sweet boy who just needs someone willing to give him time.
