Doc Holliday's Story
DOC HOLLIDAY
Cane Corso Mix
DOB: @ 07/15/2020

At 1:15 AM, our PetPromise voicemail lit up with desperation. A man on the east side, voice trembling, was begging for someone—anyone—to help a dog he had found collapsed on the ground. Starving. Motionless. Barely hanging on. He had called every agency he could think of, including Franklin County Dog Shelter, but after nearly three hours of pleading… no one had come.

He told us, “He’s dying right here in front of me.”

We called him back immediately. By then, the dog warden had just arrived. But we couldn't erase the picture of the dog starving, neglected, lying in the grass without the strength to raise his head or stand on his own. We messaged the rescue coordinator at the Franklin County Dog Shelter first thing that morning—asking if the dog was alive.

They had him.

They told us he was an unneutered male, maybe 5 years old. So malnourished they started a medical protocol called refeeding—a slow, delicate process used when a dog is so close to death that even food, if introduced too fast, could kill him. The tip of his tail was necrotic and would need to be amputated once he was strong enough to survive surgery.

And still… he was gentle. Interactive. Calm. He knew how to sit and to shake. He took treats softly and gratefully. His eyes said so much more than he could.
PetPromise found a wonderful volunteer foster home (where ANY dog would be lucky to live) and picked him up as soon as his three-day stray hold was up. He was going to know love and carte after all that he had been through.

He is currently in a foster home that loves him dearly as if he was their child. He is being slowly refed and he is gaining weight very slowly. He has a long way to go and we hold our breath every day that he keeps progressing. He is the sweetest most grateful dog. He has bite marks all over his face and body yet he wags his tail and follows his foster Mom and Dad around like a puppy (with the little strength he has.) We don't know when Doc will be fully recovered but we are in it for the long haul....he deserves to live the best life for the rest of his life. We are so happy that we were able to be part of his rescue story.

If you are interested in learning more about this pup, please complete an online adoption application at https://form.jotform.com/223107373504044

We do not have a shelter or sanctuary. All pets are cared for in volunteer foster homes until they are adopted.

We require a home visit as part of the application process. We are only able to coordinate home visits where we have local volunteers.

All of the dogs in our care and available for adoption have been rescued from shelters, the streets or from neglect or abuse situations. We do our best to determine the given breed or breeds of any dog in our program based on our experience and advice of professionals. However, we cannot guarantee the particular breed or mix of any dog nor can we guarantee its health or specific temperament.
