Diesel (Foster needed)

Meet Diesel the 3yo Great Dane<br/><br/>Diesel is a big, goofy Great Dane with an even bigger personality—and right now, he needs someone willing to give him a little extra time, patience, and TLC while we help him get healthy.<br/><br/>Diesel has been struggling to maintain his weight, and we're currently working with his veterinarian to figure out exactly what his body tolerates best. He has done well with certain foods but has had significant stomach upset with kibble, so we're working on a nutrition plan that will allow him to safely put on the weight he desperately needs.<br/><br/>**This is where we need a very special foster—or possibly a foster-to-adopt home—for Diesel.**<br/><br/>We also believe Diesel's current living situation is making it harder to determine exactly what is working and what isn't. He's currently living in a multi-dog environment with a lot of different personalities, and managing his needs within a pack can be stressful for everyone.<br/><br/>Diesel does have some **situational resource guarding**, particularly around his food and water bowls. We believe some of this may be related to his current physical condition and being significantly underweight—when you're struggling to maintain your body weight, it's understandable that food and water can feel especially important.<br/><br/>Because of this, we believe Diesel could **absolutely thrive in a calmer, more predictable environment** where he doesn't feel like he has to compete for resources.<br/><br/>He does not necessarily need to be an only dog. **Another dog can be perfectly fine**, but we would want that dog to be easygoing rather than dominant, and his foster needs to be someone who understands his triggers and is comfortable managing them appropriately.<br/><br/>In a one- or two-dog household, having a dedicated food and water area—and simply not having multiple dogs coming and going around his bowls—would make management considerably easier.<br/><br/>Diesel needs someone who can give him:<br/><br/>* A calm, stable environment where he can focus on getting healthy<br/>* Careful monitoring of his meals and food tolerance<br/>* The ability to follow his veterinarian-directed feeding plan<br/>* Plenty of love and one-on-one attention<br/>* A home willing to give him time to regain his strength and body condition<br/>* A savvy, responsible handler who understands that **his bowls are his trigger and can manage that appropriately**<br/>* Ideally, someone comfortable with a Great Dane who may require some additional medical monitoring<br/><br/>Outside of those situations, **Diesel is a wonderful dog.** When he feels good, his goofy, affectionate personality comes shining through. He's a big boy with a big heart who wants to be loved and included.<br/><br/>We are **not looking for someone to "fix" Diesel.** We're looking for someone willing to partner with us while we figure out what his body needs and help him become the healthy, happy dog we know he can be.<br/><br/>A foster home would not be expected to shoulder his expenses. Barking Back Rescue will continue to oversee his medical care and work with his foster on his feeding plan and needs. I'm not convinced he can't eat kibble, but without the right environment for trial and error, it's hard to tell. <br/><br/>A **foster-to-adopt arrangement** may also be possible for the right home, allowing everyone—including Diesel—to see how the relationship develops while he continues his recovery.<br/><br/>If you have experience with Great Danes, large-breed dogs, or medically sensitive dogs—and you have room in your home and heart for a big boy who needs a little extra help right now—we would love to hear from you.<br/><br/>**We truly believe Diesel will thrive once he's in an environment where he can relax, feel secure, eat without competition, and just be a dog.**<br/><br/>He has a lot of life and love left to give.
