Declan's Story
Declan is a 4.5 year old, 14.5 pound white Miniature Poodle. He has had a tough life up to now as evidenced by his initial fear at meeting new humans, new situations or new things and his broken tail. He flew up to Colorado from Texas to find a loving, patient home. We couldnt get him to come out of his crate when he arrived, and he didnt want anything to do with his foster Mom for the first few days. We have found that letting him come to you on his own, is the best way to win him over. On his fourth day at his foster home, he came to his foster Mom for attention and took a treat. Later that day, he let her pet him, and from then on it has just been a love fest, but his initial reaction to anything new is always fear. We were told by his Texas foster that she found the same thing. He warms up more quickly to women than to men. Declan seems fine with other dogs, particularly smaller females, with proper introductions.

He is very food and treat motivated. We are guessing that he has been hungry in his short life. We are using a slow feeder bowl for his meals as he inhales his food and treats no matter how much he is given. When he came into the shelter in Texas he was very matted and dirty, indicating that he may have been out running as a stray for awhile. He will tolerate brushing and scissors once he knows you, but he doesnt like clippers. He is pretty well house trained, but does pee a little when frightened or in a new situation.

Declan is neutered, he is up to date on his vaccinations (rabies, distemper and kennel cough), vet checked, heartworm tested negative and on preventative while in rescue, and microchipped.
