Cornelius's Story
Cornelius - 10 months, 46lbs, Heeler Mix, Neutered.
Estimated full grown size - 50 lbs

Our Team Says: "Cornelius was clearly severly mistreaed in his past life as he has some old injuries as does his mom. As a result he has a limp and takes a daily anti-inflamatory. His future parents might have to consider surgery down the line once he's fully done growing. He does really well with his meds and is a happy boy."

This puppy is eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal's name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? Just under a year old, Cornelius is a 60-pound blue heeler mix with the floppiest ears and the biggest personality. He's the kind of dog who will keep you laughing all day, and then crash beside you on the couch (and sigh) like he's been working a full-time job.
Cornelius is incredibly goofy, energetic, and playful — his ideal day includes a game (or ten) of fetch, squeaky toys, and long walks where he can sniff everything. He's curious about the world and loves being part of whatever you're doing. And when he finally wears himself out he transforms into a total cuddle bug and certified couch potato.
He absolutely craves your attention and loves being close to his people — but he's also great at entertaining himself. Give him a toy bin and he'll happily pull everything out one by one, creating his own little play session like it's his job. What makes Cornelius so special is his balance — he's fun, affectionate, a little silly, and incredibly loving. He's still young, so he'd do best with someone ready to give him exercise, structure, and lots of attention (which he will absolutely return tenfold).

Level of dog ownership experience required:
INTERMEDIATE – As an adult, this dog will need significant structure and plenty of daily exercise, training, and mental stimulation – 90 consecutive minutes of movement in the morning plus potty break walks and brain games throughout the day. The adopter must have relevant primary care experience with a similar breed, temperament, and/or energy level. (Primary care experience includes ownership, fostering, or dog sitting as an adult, not a dog you grew up with.) Relevant puppy care experience is a huge plus, but bare minimum the adopter must have TONS of time and patience. Raising a puppy can be a lot of fun, but it's also tremendous work. Puppies' personalities and exercise/stimulation requirements change dramatically between now and when they're a year old as their bodies and brains develop, so an active lifestyle and the ability to adapt to a pup's evolving needs are a must. We strongly urge professional dog training with a rewards based trainer from the get go. Adults only or kids ages 8 and up – all puppies go through a mouthy, rambunctious phase and often accidentally hurt children when playing. PLEASE DO YOUR OWN BREED RESEARCH to make sure you have a better understanding of the kind of temperament and exercise requirements this dog may have as an adult.

Energy level:
MEDIUM – -- he kinda falls between medium and high but i think due to his leg issue he does get tired of walking/running after a while. Very young puppies sleep and nap a lot, but their energy level skyrockets when they become teens (4 months to around a year). As an adult, this dog will need significant structure and plenty of daily exercise, training, and mental stimulation – 90 consecutive minutes of movement in the morning plus potty break walks and brain games throughout the day at a minimum. (This is regardless of dog size – many small breeds were designed for lots of activity and will exhibit unwanted behavior when they're understimulated.)

Potty trained?
Yes – He's fully potty trained and sleeps soundly through the night (no early wake-up calls—unless you make eye contact... then it's immediately time for face kisses). He's also very food motivated — treats are the way to his heart — and he'll gently paw at you when he wants a little extra love.

Social with dogs?
Mostly – Cornelius gets along great with other dogs and would thrive in a home with a playful buddy.

Tolerance to the city: Adjusting to the city – Spooked easily by loud noises and bustling areas but walks pretty well in quiet areas and probably just needs more time to adjust (may be a puppy or a brand new rescue). Would prefer a home in a calmer part of the city or the suburbs.

Comfort Level with Strangers: In between bean – Fine with meeting new people but not particularly interested, kind of shy in busy social situations like a gathering or a packed day in the park.

Social with children? (ALWAYS requires adult supervision)
Not sure - his compatibility with kids is unknown to us. He can get himself too excited and probably knock down an unsuspecting young child. Some puppies enjoy interacting with children, others get easily overwhelmed by their energy and attention. Regardless, most puppies are not a great match for a home with kids under age 8 because they go through intense mouthy play and rambunctious phases and often accidentally hurt young kids while playing. Children must always be monitored and taught to interact with dogs of any age respectfully.

Social with cats? Not sure - his compatibility with cats is unknown to us

Mouthy play: Working on it – Working on his mouthy behavior (though he's never actually bit down) but responds well and quickly to correction. He's still getting used to figuring out how to be home alone, and may have chewed a slipper or two, so puppy proofing would be beneficial with him.

Separation anxiety: Adjusting – Might cry for a few minutes when you first leave the house but settles pretty quickly and has no problem being left alone otherwise.

Leash manners:
Getting the hang of it – He's still working through his puppy habits like zig-zagging on the leash

Crate trained?
Not at all – Don't even have one, I've puppy proofed and we free range.

Medical status:
Healthy as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP and Bordetella vaccines, spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer upon intake. (For dogs under 4 months old, adopters will need to finish the DHPP vaccine series and administer the Rabies vaccine at 16 weeks of age.)

How did this dog end up with Social Tees?
Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee, Los Angeles, and Puerto Rico. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives.

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses.

This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes.

LEARN MORE ABOUT US: socialteesnyc.org and Instagram @socialteesnyc
