Cooper - In Foster's Story

Meet Cooper. Cooper would like to speak to the manager of your household immediately.

Cooper is an approximately 9-year-old, 8-pound Chihuahua mix who was surrendered to JPAWS by his previous owner. According to them, his left patella has been luxated beyond repair for quite some time, and honestly? Cooper does not care. He has fully accepted his identity as a mostly 3-legged menace.

Unfortunately, his right patella decided to join the chaos and started luxating too, but thanks to surgery at Southshore Animal Hospital, that knee has now been repaired. Some dogs need physical therapy and encouragement after surgery. Cooper simply woke up and went right back to patrolling the yard like a tiny security guard with absolutely no understanding of his own size limitations.

This dog is EIGHT pounds. Eight. Yet every time a leaf moves outside, he responds like he’s defending a classified military facility.

He is dog friendly and especially enjoys running fence patrol with his giant foster Golden Retriever brother and fellow foster Gertie, a chiweenie. He will happily share snacks and coexist peacefully… unless he is on a bed, pillow, blanket, clothes pile, or anything remotely soft. At that point, the spirit of every viral Chihuahua meme enters his body and he becomes deeply offended by your presence. Honestly, it’s impressive.

Despite his tough-guy routine, Cooper’s favorite activity is being held like a baby. He will paw dramatically at your ankles while you’re getting ready in the morning until you pick him up. Once held, he becomes an awkward little potato with limbs going in questionable directions, but he is completely content just being near his person.

We could amputate his left leg, but at this point it feels unnecessary and mostly cosmetic. Cooper has adapted beautifully and gets around just fine. Instead, we’re focusing on more important things… like his scheduled dental in June because sir’s teefers need some attention.

Cooper has already had one expensive surgery. We are not funding a third season of Grey’s Anatomy for this tiny creature.

Now, there is one very important disclaimer. Cooper’s foster Aunt Rebecca has lovingly nicknamed him “The Electrician.”

Why?

Because this tiny criminal has chewed through:
• an AC window unit cord
• a power strip cord
• and an Apple Watch charger

Yes, really.

So Cooper’s future family either needs to be extremely tidy with wires or invest in every bitter/yucky cord spray on the market. He has apparently decided electricity is a food group.

You’ve been warned.

If you are looking for a hilariously opinionated little dog who acts like he pays the mortgage but secretly just wants to be carried around and loved, Cooper may be your guy.

If you would like to meet Cooper, please send a completed application to our Programs Director and his foster mom to Rachel@jeffersonspca.org.

Adoption fee includes vaccines, spay/neuter surgery, microchip and a heartworm test. Any dog that tests positive for heartworms can be treated through our Fix-A-Heart Program. Adopter has to buy a year supply of heartworm prevention before treatment begins.

Please note: this application is view-only in Dropbox and must be downloaded to your device to be completed. You may fill it out using a PDF editing program or print it and complete it by hand. https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/ahiajf6e6i0ox2hdl09jk/JSPCA-Application_2.0-Newest-Updates.pdf?rlkey=be9he1julh02etikl021k9plk&dl=0

All adoptions subject to approval.

Jefferson SPCA's Adoption Policy
We require a completed adoption application for all animals. Applications are carefully reviewed to ensure the best possible match for both the adopter and the pet. This process typically takes 3–5 business days and is not immediate. We do not offer same-day adoptions. Animals are not “held,” “reserved,” or adopted on demand. Meeting an animal does not guarantee approval, and animals are not adopted on a first-come, first-served basis. Our team prioritizes thoughtful, responsible placements. We verify information provided on applications, including veterinary history and landlord approval when applicable. Incomplete or inaccurate applications will not be approved. Adoption inquiries should be directed to our team: Cats and small animals: Hannah, hannah@jeffersonspca.org Dogs: Martha (volunteer coordinator), cajunlassie78@att.net Email is the best and fastest way to communicate with our organization. While Jefferson Feed kindly hosts our adoption center, their staff is not involved in the adoption process and cannot provide application updates or approvals. We ask that adopters respect their time and direct all adoption-related questions to our team. We are committed to placing animals in safe, appropriate, and permanent homes.
