Columbus's Story

Columbus - 2 years & 11lbs, Chi Mix, Neutered

This dog is eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal's name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org

Our Team Says: "Columbus needs a special adopter because he's mostly blind due to cataracts in his eyes. We're hoping there is someone out there that is wanting to adopt him and possibly do this surgery for him. This pup was rescued from a hoarding situation in PR - involving about 40 dogs. Due to this these pups are on the shyer side and need patient people who will give them time to get used to normal life. They are very sweet dogs: just need more time and patience. Columbus is doing well in the city just takes time to adjust to his human."

Thier Foster Parent Says: "He is a sweet little dog with a big personality. At first he can be very shy and wants to hide all the time, but with time, he will slowly open up to you and show his real personality. He is very selective with other dogs. If he likes the dog, he will wag his tail, which doesn't happen quite often. If he does not like the other dog, then he will retreat from the other dog. If the other dog insists on getting close to him, then he will start barking, which is his feisty side. Overall, he is very gentle and relaxed and is good at staying home by himself. He loves walking outside, especially in the park where he can sniff everything and enjoy the sun. He is mostly potty trained and often does his thing outside of the apartment. If he cannot hold it, he will pee on the peeing pad. A few accidents can happen but he is learning fast. He can be stubborn sometimes and you will need a lot of patience to deal with this smarty. He is not afraid of the loud noises and chaos in the city, which makes him a great dog to have in a NYC apartment."

Level of dog ownership experience required:
BEGINNER – “Beginner” doesn't necessarily mean easy as all dogs will require time, work, and patience, but we predict this dog will be low on the challenge scale because of their breed/age combo. Potentially a good fit for someone who has relevant dog care experience (fostering, dog sitting) and is looking to adopt their first pup.

Energy level:
MEDIUM – Needs a daily 60-90 minute walk or window of quick paced exercise (minimum) in addition to potty break strolls (10-30 min each). Also needs significant socializing opportunities outside the home and mental stimulation at home like tricks training practice, chew items, and puzzle toys. (This is regardless of dog size – many small breeds were designed for lots of activity and will exhibit unwanted behavior when they're understimulated.)

TOLERANCE TO CITY
City pup – Seems unfazed by the sights and sounds, may as well have been born here.

POTTY TRAINING
Yes -- will go outside and use pee pads when he really needs to

COMFORT LEVEL WITH STRANGERS
Wallflower – Very shy with new people and takes a while to warm up. Afraid when unfamiliar people try to say hi on the street, hides or shrinks back when new people visit the home.

BEHAVIOR WITH CHILDREN (always requires adult supervision)
Yes for most ages – very confident, gentle, low energy, tolerant, not mouthy

SOCIAL BEHAVIOR WITH OTHER DOGS
Still working on it – Either retreats from other dogs or barks at them/leash reactive. Needs more socialization training or may just be a dog that prefers human company
Okay to be in a home with another dog.

RESPECTFUL BEHAVIOR WITH OTHER ANIMALS (cats, small pets, etc.)
Yes – Seems to get along with cats etc., either tries to play with them or is mostly uninterested

MOUTHY BEHAVIOR
Past this stage– Little to no interest in chewing on stuff or putting things in their mouth that aren't food. Doesn't try to chew on hands, feet, etc. during playtime

SEPARATION ANXIETY (Please leave your foster dog home alone every day for at least 20 minutes.)
Past this stage – Completely fine being left home alone. Doesn't cry or exhibit destructive behavior when you leave the apartment or house.

LEASH MANNERS
Getting the hang of it – Probably hasn't been on a leash much in their life but figuring it out. Might be a mild puller but responds to correction.

CUDDLE BUG LEVEL
Lower – Independent, mostly keeps to themself (may be a new rescue or shy, this could change)

JUMPING ON PEOPLE TO SAY HELLO
Calm Greetings – Doesn't jump up on people or dogs. Always all four on the floor.

CRATE TRAINING
Not at all – Don't even have one, I've puppy proofed and we free range.

Medical status:
Healthy as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines; heartworm tested if coming from Tennessee or Puerto Rico; spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer upon intake

How did this dog end up with Social Tees?
Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee, Los Angeles, and Puerto Rico. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives.

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses.

This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes.

LEARN MORE ABOUT US: socialteesnyc.org and Instagram @socialteesnyc
