Coffee Jane's Story

At 14 years old, Coffee Jane's world was turned upside down when she was surrendered to Downey Shelter by the family she knew. While we don't know much about her life before coming into rescue, it's clear that she has some sensitivities - particularly when it comes to certain types of touch.

Because of this, Coffee Jane needs a patient, understanding family who is willing to learn her signals, respect her boundaries, and let her build trust at her own pace. Thankfully, for the past seven months, she has had exactly that with one of our wonderful, patient, and dedicated foster families.

With time, consistency, and plenty of understanding, Coffee Jane has made incredible progress. Here's a recent update from her foster family that shows just how far this sweet senior has come:

"Coffee Jane is a special girl who has come such a long way. She wants to be loved and to love in return, and as she has learned to trust me, I've learned that she can be very loving and will happily give me lots of kisses. She has also made wonderful progress with everyday handling. She now allows me to put a slip lead over her head to go outside and is pretty comfortable with it-a big win! She has relaxed enough that I can briefly pick her up when needed, such as getting her into the car or bathtub.

That said, Coffee Jane still has important boundaries, and respecting those boundaries is key to helping her feel safe and continue to build confidence. I've learned to read her signals and understand when she is comfortable and when she needs space. Physical handling can still be a trigger for her, so I don't push her beyond what she is ready for.

The entire time that I've had Coffee Jane, she has been great with my little dog. I even have a cat that she is very sweet with. Observing her in the little's yard at Frosted Faces, she gets along with other dogs there as long as they respect her boundaries. Coffee Jane loves car rides and just lays down and sleeps the entire way. She also enjoys walks, and while she can get a little reactive towards other dogs, she is easily redirected.

Coffee Jane is definitely a floor potato. She will sometimes get on the couch, but she really likes the floor or a cozy little bed of her own. She's quite independent. She is not a shadow, but she does like to be nearby when I'm home. When I'm away from home, she is quiet and just sleeps.

Coffee Jane has a very good appetite and loves treats. She takes them quite gently and takes meds quite easily mixed in her food. I have discovered that she is protective of her food, so she has her own space when she eats. When she's done eating, I pick up her bowl, and all is well.

Coffee Jane needs a very special family - one willing to give her the love, time, patience, and understanding she deserves. With those things, I truly believe Jane will blossom into the loving companion she wants to be."

If you have a spot in your heart for Coffee Jane and are able to give her the patience and structure she needs, please email: placement@frostedfacesfoundation.org
