Coco's Story

Coco spent years on a chain being invisible, and it shows. She came to us skinny, carrying old scars, fly bitten ears, and the kind of caution that comes from being let down by people. When a kind stranger picked her up, she was shaking with her tail tucked between her legs.
It took her about two hours to become a different dog.
Give Coco a treat, a yard, and a little kindness and she lights up. She loves to play, she can jump like a dog half her age, and she melts for treats, which makes training feel like a game to her. She is learning sit and down for the first time in her life and picking them up fast. She settles beautifully in a crate with her blankets and toys, and house training is a work in progress that improves with every day of routine.
Coco is around 7 years old with the spirit of a puppy who never got a puppyhood. She can enjoy other dogs when introductions are slow and play styles match, so any resident dog should meet her first, and she needs a home without cats. Her ideal match is a patient adopter who can give her consistency while she learns how to be a house dog, because she wants nothing more than to be one.
This sweet girl has done all her waiting. She is ready for the family that finally sees her.
Come meet Coco at Petersburg Animal Care and Control.
To adopt Coco, contact adoptpetersburg@gmail.com

Petersburg Animal Care & Control's Adoption Policy
Thank you for your interest in adopting from Petersburg Animal Care & Control! We’re so glad you’re considering giving a shelter pet a loving home. We do not charge an adoption fee; however, all animals must be spayed or neutered prior to adoption, and the cost of the procedure is covered by the adopter. We’re happy to support adopters by coordinating appointments with our low-cost veterinary partners for spay/neuter services and other basic care needs. Adoption Process • We prefer to schedule appointments for meet-and-greets to ensure that staff or volunteers are available to spend adequate time helping you get to know the animal. • When you arrive, please sign in and wait to be escorted by a staff member or volunteer before entering the kennel areas. • For safety reasons, please do not reach into kennels or attempt to touch animals through barriers. If you’re interested in a particular pet, our team will bring them to a meet-and-greet area for proper introductions. • After your visit, you’re welcome to submit an adoption application. Applications must be approved before we can schedule a meet-and-greet with your family pets. • Meet-and-greets with personal pets are by appointment only, and for safety, two staff members must be present to handle all animals involved. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to make each match the best fit possible — both for our animals and their future families.
