Coco's Story

URGENT!! FOSTER OR ADOPTER NEEDED ASAP!! PLEASE HELP!!!

TD:LR Coco is an 8 yo spayed female. She is currently in Bellingham and needs a committed home with someone who has breed experience. Shes friendly but aloof, and seems to be okay with other dogs, so could possibly live with a male dog of similar size and activity level/age. I would not recommend cats, and no small children either. She is a wiggle butt and loves her toys, but so far is uncomfortable with handling by people she doesn't know. She loves her food (too much - needs to lose weight) and is very smart.

I was contacted last weekend on this chunky girl. Coco had been living with her dad in a nursing home in Gig Harbor for the last year, but as his condition deteriorated, he needed to be moved to a memory care facility and they wouldn't take Coco. She had to go NOW.

The rescue person that contacted me had several interested adopters on a post that had been made about Cocos need, but since she was leaving town for some family business, she needed help with finding Coco's new home.

We talked with a lovely couple in Bellingham, who rearranged their life and drove to Gig Harbor to get her this week. Problem is, the information we initially got about Coco wasn't exactly right. The facility cook, who helped the owner care for Coco, described some behavioral issues that conflicted with what we were all originally told. M & J went anyway, hoping it would all work out, but realize they wont be able to keep her long term.

So, Coco is in need again not quite the same rush as last week, but we dont have a lot of time - she needs a new place to go by July 13. . I havent met Coco in person but heres what Ive been told so far:

Coco is at least 20 pounds overweight. She has an ear infection that hasnt been well cared for (saw the vet, but follow up and/or medication care was not successful). She has an appointment to go to the vet this week, and were hoping shes comfortable enough with M & J so they can get her in the car to the vet (right now she growls when they try to put a leash on her we believe this is partly due to her discomfort around her ears).

Shes very smart, and learning new routine quickly. She loves her stuffie toys and is very food motivated. On her second night with M & J she broke out of a partly open window, pushing out the screen, and escaped the yard. Shed been barking and barking at something out in the yard earlier that night and we think she may have gotten out to go after it. They were out in the dark trying to find her (their property backs up to state lands and they were concerned shed take off into the woods or worse, in the other direction and get to the road and hit by a car). It was a very stressful night (and 4 a.m. text to get!). Thankfully, she returned on her own a few hours later, happy and relaxed, and very tired. Poor M & J, also exhausted, not so much.

Coco is looking for a quiet home where she can enjoy her golden years. Shes reserved with new people, so a busy home with lots of people coming over wouldn't be ideal for her. She will need time to settle. She needs to lose weight, and seems to enjoy hikes, so could be a great hiking companion. She seems to know some obedience and hand signals, but I'm told she pulls very hard on lead (which right now could be stress - a harness could help to reduce pulling, but shes not comfortable with that kind of handling yet to be able to place a harness on her). She rides well in the car, but did have some car sickness on the long ride. We're told shes not fond of the vet and usually needs to be muzzled there.

This girl has been through a lot and needs someone who can give her the time she needs to become her best self. Moving to the care facility with her dad was stressful, but at least her person was still with her. Now, moved again, she doesn't even have that. Please help this good girl she deserves the best!

Washington state (as previously mentioned, she's currently in Bellingham) - no interstate transports; will also consider adopters in British Columbia, Oregon, and Idaho.

Please fill out an adoption application to adopt this girlie:
https://forms.spdrdogs.org/Adoption/ See less
