Say hello to Cleo! Cleo is what would happen if a chocolate-and-vanilla cupcake developed excellent manners, grew four legs and began smiling at everyone like she was running for mayor. She is an 8-month-old, 40-pound female Great Pyrenees mix, probably with Border Collie—although there appears to be a generous scoop of marshmallow fluff, a sprinkle of Disney sidekick and perhaps one extremely pleasant receptionist somewhere in the bloodline.<br/><br/> Pickup Location: Norman, OK<br/>-Adopter will need to pick up in person if approved. At an age when many puppies are living like unsupervised fraternity pledges—stealing socks, licking electrical outlets and making decisions nobody’s security deposit can survive—Cleo is apparently choosing peace. She has the soothing presence of a weighted blanket, the gentle disposition of someone’s favorite preschool teacher and the sunny little smile of a person who has never opened an unexpected bill. Cleo’s ideal home, according to her foster, is “a house with a pool.” Not because she has expensive taste, obviously. She would also graciously accept a plastic doggy pool, a large outdoor water dish or any container capable of becoming a puddle if approached with sufficient enthusiasm. Cleo LOVES water. She splashes, stomps and wallows around like a tiny suburban hippo who just discovered the country club lifestyle. Give this girl a pool and she will immediately begin living like a retired woman in Florida whose only appointments are water aerobics and lunch.<br/><br/>Despite her generally calm demeanor indoors, Cleo clocks in around a 7/10 on the energy scale when it’s time to play. She loves running around the yard, playing with toys and romping with other dogs. She’s even surprisingly gentle with puppies, which is impressive considering puppies tend to approach personal boundaries like tiny drunk coworkers at an office Christmas party. Cleo likes dogs of all sizes, although she may snap at a smaller dog if human food is involved and she believes they are receiving benefits not included in her compensation package. She usually thinks she is starving—even immediately after eating—because apparently her stomach has the memory span of a goldfish and the legal team of a major corporation. Cats remain an unanswered question. Cleo has been around teenagers, but we don’t have enough information yet to declare her the official president of the youth council. With new people, Cleo is extremely shy. She isn’t going to march into a room, distribute friendship bracelets and begin networking. Her social strategy is closer to that of a Victorian child entering a ballroom for the first time: observe quietly, assume everything may be haunted and wait for proof that nobody intends to make her participate in a group activity. She has visited her foster’s office and was very skittish at first, but once she realized the people were safe, she began enjoying their attention and accepting pets. That is Cleo’s pattern—she needs time, patience and the freedom to approach people when she is ready. Once she decides you belong in her trusted circle, the shy little wallflower turns into a sweet snugglebug who would very much like to discuss why your hands are not currently petting her.<br/><br/>Cleo is mostly a homebody right now. She may eventually enjoy adventures once she feels safer and more confident, but she is not presently requesting a packed social calendar, matching hiking gear or brunch reservations on a crowded patio. Her leash skills are, in the most diplomatic terms available, a disaster. She is still very skittish out and about, so walks currently feel less like a peaceful neighborhood stroll and more like escorting a suspicious woodland creature through customs. She’ll need someone patient who will help her build confidence slowly, without expecting her to wake up on Tuesday and suddenly become an REI catalog model. She can crawl into the car by herself, and once aboard, she either gazes out the window or lies down. No dramatic singing, no attempts to take control of the steering wheel and no demands that you stop at every drive-thru. She simply settles in and contemplates the passing scenery. At home, Cleo is sweet, playful and surprisingly easygoing. She enjoys toys and theoretically understands fetch. She is happy to chase the object; returning it is where the two of you appear to have developed different contractual interpretations. You threw it away, Cleo retrieved it for herself, and she sees no reason to repeat your mistake. Honestly, her position is legally compelling.<br/><br/>She also loves to chew, but she is generally not destructive. She calmly entertains herself with appropriate items, although an unattended shoe may occasionally be selected for an unauthorized quality-control inspection. She isn’t especially mischievous, doesn’t attempt elaborate escapes and only barks sometimes while outside. Potty training is currently in the “mostly, but please remain involved in the process” stage. Cleo usually goes outside, but she doesn’t reliably alert when she needs to go. A consistent schedule is important. Cleo likes relaxing in her kennel as long as the door remains open. Closing it when she has decided she is finished causes her to file a formal complaint regarding unlawful fluffy imprisonment. More than anything, Cleo needs a patient family who understands that trust cannot be rushed. A securely fenced yard is important because she is still skittish and will need a safe place to play while she adjusts. She isn’t the dog who will arrive, immediately greet the entire neighborhood and begin hosting game night. She is the dog who will quietly study you, slowly decide you are safe and then reveal that beneath all that caution is an affectionate, playful, water-obsessed little sweetheart who has been waiting for permission to exhale.
