Clementine's Story

Meet Clementine!!
Absolutely adorable girl is making a lot of progress!!!
This beautiful girl is one of the 13 dogs we took in from a horrible hoarding situation. She survived being in a feces covered home during freezing temps with no heat, no water and no electricity for a very long time. This sweet girl is timid but wants to love. She will need some time to adjust to a new place.
She has recently made big improvements and will follow her foster mom around the yard and even jump in her lap. She’s a work in progress but she’s worth it!
Clementine is an approx 3 year old female. She is a mix of a lot of small breeds we guess. She weighs 12.5 Pounds. She has already been spayed, is up to date on vaccines and microchipped. She is heartworm negative and on monthly preventions.
She was one of the more timid ones. She will run and find a hiding spot and wait until you’re not looking to come out. Closing off her hiding places seems to be the key to getting her to come out of her shell.
She does really well with another super social dog around. When her buddy Guava was around she would come out of hiding and follow her over to us for petting and treats. Another dog in the home really helps her see people are safe and fun. If you grab her she will sit and cuddle with you.
Clementine has had no issues around other dogs. She coexists with them well. Her and Guava choose to cuddle up together in the same kennel. She doesn’t mind hyper dogs around either. She’s not fostered with cats but we think she would be fine with them.
She is fostered with kids and does fine with calmer kids that can give her space until she’s comfortable. As with any dog she would need any children in the house to be respectful and not treat her like a toy. A sweet, low energy kid with a lap to cuddle in would likely make her very happy.
Clementine is great about crate training. She uses it as a safe space and is very quiet unless she needs to go out. She does not go potty in her crate. She has done very well on car rides and does not get sick. She is very new to leash training and is terrified of the leash as well as being outdoors so it is slow going. She gets scared when she feels the tension on the leash. She will need a lot more time to get settled and used to the outdoors and the leash.
She has started to do very well with potty training HOWEVER it may regress in a new place until she trusts you. She came from a place where they were trapped inside and had no options for going anywhere else so she’s overcome a lot. She was always one that didn’t potty in her crate. She likes to stay clean. Her new owner will just need to be patient and understanding given her history and give her time to adjust.
Clementine has not had any issues sharing food with people. We do give her space to eat alone from other animals so she doesn’t feel rushed. Given her history of having to fight other dogs just to eat it would be a good idea to always give her alone time with her food. She deserves to feel comfortable when she is eating. She has been around another dog and tried to eat their food. They growled and she backed off so she seems less likely to fight over it than some from the same home.
She currently has a lower energy level so far. We expect she will get more energetic once she fully decompresses. She is quick when she wants to be and a good climber. She’s definitely got some spunk when she chooses to.
Clementine needs a person willing to work with her and gain her trust. We can see how badly she wants to trust someone. If you’re willing to put in the work with her she’s definitely worth it. This sweet beautiful girl has so much potential.
***Do not apply to adopt one of these hoarding case dogs if you’re not serious about giving them time to adjust. It’s absolutely unfair to expect them to adjust in a day or two. We’ve had 3 adopted and returned within 24 hours of adoption for not being immediately settled and perfect in a completely new place. All returned for things we explained upfront about them. It’s completely unreasonable and unrealistic to expect that from dogs that have been through what they have. The last thing they need is to be shuffled around due to adopters not listening or being serious about their needs***
Vet and home checks required.
Located in Hampton VA.
(She will need to be adopted within a 2 hour drive radius)
‼️Please message us directly at VillageDogResource@gmail.com with questions or to get an application.
