She likes to ride in the back and will curl up for a snooze when she’s done looking out the window.<br/><br/>Chloe seems to know the word "potty," and heads to the yard to root around for the perfect spot. Once her belly is full and the day is done, she burrows under the covers and sleeps like a champ through the night.<br/><br/>Chloe gets along with other dogs and would make a perfect companion for anyone looking for a lap warmer or an errands partner.<br/><br/>Chloe received a dental cleaning on 4/29/26 with 6 teeth extracted.<br/><br/>Chloe was transferred to Valley Humane on 4/27 from the Tri-City Animal Shelter. She had been found stray. Chloe weighs 8.2 pounds and is a senior dog (estimated to be aged between 7 and 10 years).<br/><br/>Medical disclosures:<br/>1. Heart murmur:<br/>This dog has a heart murmur audible on the left side. It is a Grade 2 out of 6, where Grade 1 is the quietest murmur and 6 is the loudest. She has no other symptoms of heart disease at this time. Many mild heart murmurs do not progress to cause disease in the dog. However, it is also possible that this murmur could worsen as the dog ages and possibly go on to cause heart disease. Therefore, it is recommended that your veterinarian monitor her closely for progression of the heart murmur during each physical exam. Currently, her thoracic x-rays are normal with no evidence of heart enlargement. <br/>2. Periodontal disease<br/>This patient has been diagnosed with periodontal disease (also known as gum disease or dental disease.) This disease is extremely common in dogs and cats, especially as they age (however, it can also occur in younger animals due to genetic and other factors.) Periodontal disease occurs when bacterial plaque causes inflammation of the gums and eventual destruction of the bone in which the teeth are anchored. This patient had a dental cleaning recently at VHS. At that time the patient was anesthetized and all the teeth were cleaned with an ultrasonic scaler to remove tartar and plaque. The teeth were then polished to prevent premature tartar build up. The teeth were visually evaluated for fractures, and periodontal disease. Dental care is an on-going process that will need to be addressed for the life of this patient. The adopting family is encouraged to discuss continuing dental care for this patient with their family veterinarian. <br/>3. Hip osteoarthritis <br/>This dog has arthritic changes in both hips. Arthritis is the breakdown of cartilage in a joint often due to old-age. We are currently treating her with an an anti-inflammatory medication called Metacam that is prescribed specifically for arthritis pain in dogs. Many dogs with arthritis do very well when their pain is controlled with medication (such as Metacam). Your family veterinarian can advise you of other treatment options such as low impact exercise like swimming and other medication options.
