Chippy's Story

You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Meet Chippy... the little dog who's trying so hard to believe in people again. ❤ï ̧
Chippy came to us from a high-kill shelter in Kentucky after his owners dumped him there. The shelter staff told us he was shutting down from fear, and our rescue partners begged us to give him a chance because they believed this little boy deserved better than the ending he was facing.
They were right.
What they also told us broke my heart. Somewhere along the way, people weren't kind to Chippy. He had been caught with a catch pole, so anything around his neck terrified him. When he arrived, his collar slipped off, and we couldn't safely touch his neck to put another one on. He wasn't being mean—he was protecting himself from something he had learned to fear.
Because of that, we couldn't place him with the family who had hoped to adopt him. It simply wasn't safe for Chippy or for them.
So he came home with me.
For the first day, I simply sat with him for ten minutes at a time, talking softly. No expectations. No pressure. Just letting him know that not every human wants something from him.
Then something beautiful happened.
His eyes softened.
His little tail started to wag. He crawled into my lap, kissed me, and began asking for pets.
On the second day, he willingly walked into the shower, and while he was relaxed, we gently slipped a collar on him. He didn't love it—but he accepted it.
Today, just a few days later, Chippy trots beside me on a leash. He lets me carefully put on his collar. He runs to greet me, climbs into my lap, and covers my face with kisses. He's good with my dogs and is discovering that life can actually feel safe.
The hardest part?
I think Chippy has decided I'm his person.
But I can't be his forever person.
As much as I'd love to keep every dog that steals a piece of my heart, my job is to help them find the family that will love them for the rest of their lives.
So I'm looking for someone very special.
Chippy needs a patient, dog-savvy person who understands that trust is earned, not demanded. Someone willing to let him move at his own pace. Someone who will celebrate the little victories, because every one of them is huge for a dog who has learned that people can hurt you.
He is not a mean dog.
He's a frightened little soul who desperately wants to trust again.
Once you're in his heart, you're really in it.
I'm hoping to find his person sooner rather than later. Every day he becomes more attached to me, and I don't want him to feel like he's being abandoned all over again. I'd much rather help him bond with the family who will love him for the rest of his life.
If you have the patience to let a broken heart heal, Chippy will repay you with a love that only a rescued dog can give.
Sometimes the dogs who have been loved the least... love the biggest.
Could you be the happy ending this little boy has been waiting for?IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ
Click here for the ADOPTION APPLICATION if you are interested in adopting this pet.
Applications are the first step in the adoption process. Please do not call or email simply to express interest. We are all volunteers and receiving your application saves us time and helps to determine the best match for both people and dogs.
We provide as much information as we currently have on each dog in their description. For questions on the adoption process, including fees, please review the Adoption page. If you have additional questions or are interested in adopting, please fill out an adoption application. Once we receive your application someone will be in touch to answer your questions. We do not arrange visits to meet dogs without an application. If you'd like to meet a variety of dogs without filling out an application please attend one of our events, listed under the events link.
Thank you!
