8/9/2023 UPDATE FROM CHIEF'S HANDLER IN THE HOUNDS OF PRISON EDUCATION PROGRAM: Here's the most recent update from Chief's handler:

This past week, we all thought Chief was going to be adopted. I had prepared myself for saying good-bye and was writing a letter to his adopter. Then, I got the news that the adopter decided she wasn't ready for a dog. That news was bittersweet for me. I am sad that Chief won't be going to his forever home, but I'm secretly glad that I get to spend more time with him. I love Chief very much.

I will continue working with Chief to make him the best dog he can be. Although, to be honest, he already is that dog!

Won't someone out there see what a wonderful, loving dog Chief is and give him what he wants and needs--a forever home of his very own?"

It has been two weeks since Furry Friends Network enrolled Chief in the HOPE (Hounds of Prison Education) Program, and he is doing great! You can follow his progress as he learns basic and advanced obedience and tricks at this link https://www.hopedogs.org/dogs/chief/

Chief will benefit greatly from all that the HOPE Program has to offer and because he is a HOPE Dog, his adoptive family is eligible to take advantage of free lifetime training assistance should the need arrive!

Prior to entering the program, Chief was found under a trampoline with a fractured right, rear tibia. He had surgery and spent the past few months recovering. That means he spent most of his puppyhood on crate rest. Because of that he is still very puppy like! He’s excitable, playful, bouncy, energetic and smart too!

Chief is about a year old and loves to play. Everything is a game to him! He can get quite excited when playing, so we’re working on teaching Chief to calm down and play appropriately. His ideal family will be an active one who has the time and energy to tire him out. Chief definitely loves his toys, and the harder, the better. Stuffed animals don’t last too long. You could say he is the Chief Fluff Master!

Chief loves the outdoors and does not mind cold weather, he even seems to like the rain and snow too! He has played with two of the dogs in the HOPE Program and plays with most of the other dogs by running along the fence with them. When he has to go potty, he will let you know by sitting at the door, licking your hand and then pacing back-and-forth between you and the door. But if you ignore him, he may have an accident. He gets better every week.

Chief is looking for a home where he can run around and be his goofy self! It’s important to remember that he didn’t really get to have a typical puppyhood due to that broken leg, so please understand that sometimes he’s still just a big puppy. Chief isn't letting that past injury define him. His leg was broken but his spirit was not. It definitely does not slow him down from any activity! He loves to explore and use his nose to find the hide and seek toys - game we play to work his brain and make him think. Chief is such a hard worker and will quickly learn anything you want to teach him! Chief's leg has healed and once he finds his new family, we hope his heart will as well! We all want to feel loved and wanted!
