Charlie's Story
Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement-Kennel License #2617
**Due to Charlie needing neutered, his adoption will not be finalized until on or after: 7-25-26

Could he do well with kids? Yes, with children 14 years and older.

Could he do well with other dogs? Yes, on a dog-by-dog basis.

Has this dog lived with cats? No. [The Lycoming County SPCA does not "cat test" dogs per the Association of Shelter Veterinarian's Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters.]

---

What volunteers have to say about this animal:

Meet Charlie -Quiet Optimist and Very Good Boy

Charlie won't be the first dog to run up and introduce himself. He'll be the one standing just a little ways off, watching, listening, taking it all in...and then, with a deep breath and a little courage, deciding to come say hello.

That's Charlie's quiet superpower.

This handsome Retriever mix is still learning that the world can be a safe place. New sounds surprise him. Busy places can feel overwhelming. Doorways sometimes require a moment of consideration. But time after time, Charlie chooses to keep moving forward anyway.

What Charlie Is Like:
- Gentle, thoughtful, and incredibly sweet
- Loves peaceful walks and exploring at his own pace
- A world-class sniffer
- Brave, even when he's feeling unsure
- Looking for someone who will let trust grow naturally

The best version of Charlie doesn't appear all at once. It shows up in little moments. The way he stops to investigate an interesting scent. The way he watches the world with those soulful golden eyes. The tiny victory of stepping through a doorway that looked intimidating just a minute before. The quiet decision to take one more step toward a person who has been kind to him. Those moments add up. And when they do, you begin to see the wonderful dog waiting underneath.

Charlie's Ideal Home Looks Like:
- Kids around 14+, on a case-by-case basis
- Other dogs, pending meet-and-greets
- A calm, patient home with predictable routines
- Someone who understands that the deepest friendships are sometimes the slowest to bloom

Charlie doesn't need someone to "fix" him. He just needs someone willing to walk beside him-literally and figuratively-as his confidence grows. We have a feeling that one day, the wrinkles on Charlie's sweet forehead won't come from worry at all. They'll just be there because that's where your hand naturally comes to rest every time you tell him he's the best boy.

---

Condensed Staff Assessment Notes: Charlie was shut down during his behavior assessment, showing clear signs of fear. Crouched down and approaching slowly, I was able to leash him. Outside, he appeared fearful and kept moving, reluctant to return to the building and passing by the barking dogs. He startled at every noise, from conversations to doors shutting. In the assessment room, he remained uncomfortable with handling, staying in a corner at least three feet away for most of the time. He cautiously approached only in the last few minutes before the assessment ended.

Charlie is still showing signs of fear and being withdrawn at the shelter, but we have begun to glimpse parts of his personality.

---

For more resources to help with any step of your adoption journey go to: https://go.petadoptiongateway.com/LycomingDT
