Charlie - ADOPTED's Story

Charlie is a Flat-coated Retriever, Basenji and Formosan Mountain Dog Mix from the country of Taiwan; he is about 4 years old and weighs 57 pounds (as of 2/14/2022).

Charlie's rescued story:

Charlie was a family pet but had lived on streets like a stray dog since puppy. He was never allowed to enter his owner’s house because many Taiwanese believe that the animals could bring bacteria into the house.

Sometimes his owner would feed him some rotten human leftover food but most of time he had starved for days and begged for food on the street.

One day someone called the animal control, Charlie and several stray dogs were captured and sent to the shelter. Days went by, Charlie’s owner never went to claim him and since he was not microchipped, he was available for adoption immediately.

Charlie’s mellow and sweet personality had soon made him favorite by the shelter volunteers who posted Charlie and strongly recommended him on the shelter Facebook. However, shelter dogs older than one year old and non-purebred are very difficult to be adopted in Taiwan. When our organization found Charlie that had already stayed in the shelter for six months and looked poorly; he was skinny and lethargic.

Charlie’s completed medical information:

Fortunately, Charlie was rescued in time; his life was saved. After receiving a through medical exam, Charlie was found to have Heartworm and Babesia positives. After over a year of painful treatments, Charlie was completely cured from those diseases and has been healthy.

Charlie has passed the following tests: Distemper, 4 Idexx (Heartworm, Lyme, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma Phagocytophilum), CBC, Biochemistry blood work, and PCR re-tests. The X-rays also show that he does not have hip dysplasia. Charlie will have teeth cleaned before coming to the USA.

Charlie is neutered, de-wormed, microchipped, and up to date on all vaccinations including rabies shot. He is heartworm negative and on monthly preventative treatment. All Charlie's medical documents including the X-ray films on his hips will be given to his adopter when he is adopted.

Charlie's temperament and personality:

Charlie has typical Golden Retriever’s temperament and personality. He likes to snuggle up and give his paw. He is very affectionate even though he had a tough start in his life, he never lost his trust on people.

After being rescued, Charlie has been living with his foster family who has two teenagers, two cats and many foster dogs. He gets along with cats and all dogs but does not interact much with them; he prefers to be with people and is more people oriented.

Sometimes the foster parents have friends with little children come visit, Charlie did not show much interest in children, but he was very calm and gentle toward them. People or children could take food or toys away from him and would never upset him. He is not food or toy aggression or possession toward people, but he does not like to be bothered by other dogs while eating.

Like most of Golden Retriever, Charlie also LOVE food, but he is polite and patiently waits for his food and treats. He could be fed with multiple dogs calmly in the same room and would not aggressively steal other dogs’ food after finishing his own.

Charlie likes to go on adventures, but he cannot be off the leash in any non-fully enclosed area because he would run away. His foster mom recalled that the first time when she took Charlie and some other dogs to the beach where she wanted Charlie to be able to run free as other dogs did, but soon after she let Charlie off the leash, he took off immediately and ignored her calling; it took foster mom an hour to get him back. Months later when they went hiking, the foster mom thought that Charlie was bond with her and could be trusted; however, Charlie still ran away after being off the leash.

Charlie is not hyper but playful and has special skills: climbing the fence and jumping over the gate; therefore, the chain link fence, garden fence or fence under 5-foot height is not safe for him.

Charlie is not passionate to strangers but very friendly. He is a little shy in the new environment but warms up quickly. He does not show much interest in toys and does not chew furniture either. He does not have separation anxiety and is not scared of thunderstorms, fireworks, or other noises. He rarely barks but barks when he sees strangers approaching the house.

Charlie will be a great companion for a moderately active family with children older than 5 years old. Apartment, condo, or retirees’ life pace is not our consideration. We prefer to place him to a family with a fully enclosed fenced yard, not invisible yard.

Charlie is house broken, walks well on leash, loves car rides and is very calm in the car.

We hope Charlie’s new parents could include him into your outings, short trips, or vacations besides daily walks in the neighborhood or playing in the back yard. We really want him to have chance to experience different parts of his life that he had missed before.

How to meet Charlie?

Charlie currently is in Taiwan but is scheduled to come to the US at the end of March; he will be staying with our foster family in North Wilmington Delaware after his arrival. If you are seriously thinking of giving Charlie a loving permanent home, please email us for an application form. Before meeting Charlie, the prospective adopter needs to fill out the application and be approved.

More videos of Charlie are as below:

1.
