Charlie's Story
Charlie is a 6-year-old Anatolian Shepherd mix with all the classic traits of his breed: fiercely loyal, highly independent, and deeply protective of what he considers his own. Found as a stray in 2021—Charlie has been adopted and returned multiple times over the years. His longest adoption lasted nearly a year, and we’re determined to make his next home the one that lasts.

Charlie isn’t your average pet; he’s a working dog at heart. Anatolian Shepherds are bred to guard livestock with little human oversight, and that independent nature shines through in Charlie. Because of this, experience with livestock guardian breeds (LGDs) is required to adopt him.

Charlie thrives in an outdoor lifestyle with room to roam. He does not do well in busy or high-traffic areas and is reactive to large trucks and vehicles, so a quiet, rural home is essential for his comfort and safety.

While Charlie has lived with another dog before, he’s shown consistent resource guarding and does best as the only animal in a calm, adult-only home. Resource guarding is not uncommon in LGD breeds, who often take their protective instincts seriously, even over food, toys, or resting spots. Charlie needs a home that understands this behavior and is prepared to manage it thoughtfully and safely.

Charlie is a fence climber, so while a traditional fence isn’t required, his adopter must have a secure, proactive management plan to keep him safe while he learns the boundaries of his new home.

He doesn’t like storms and appreciates having a sheltered space where he can feel safe during bad weather. He also enjoys digging, so his adopter should be prepared to manage or accommodate this behavior safely.

Charlie’s Ideal Home:

- Rural property with minimal traffic

- Large outdoor area with appropriate shelter

- Adult-only household

- Livestock guardian breed experience strongly recommended

Charlie isn’t for everyone, but for the right person, he’ll be an incredibly loyal, steady presence. If you’re looking for a companion with purpose, presence, and personality, Charlie might be the one.

If interested, please fill out a preliminary at odas.org/canine and someone will contact you to schedule your visit.
