CAMILA's Story
Meet Camila, the 7 year old mixed breed. We suspect Camila is some sort of Shepherd, Cattle dog, and maybe Kelpie? Your guess is as good as ours. Camila came into the Shelter after her previous guardian was unable to continue caring her. She was a bit too interested in chasing the felines (and chickens) in the home and after attempts at management and slow introduction – it was not working. So now, Camila is looking for a feline & chicken free home. This girl has a behavior some people may not be familiar with, she submissive grins. Google it, it is an interesting dog behavior! Despite being 7 years old, she is active and playful. Her previous guardian reports that she enjoyed going for walks on East Cliff and eating pup cups from local coffee shops. She does fine being left alone (everyday for a few hours) and is either crated or left free roaming. Camila is food motivated and enjoys playing with squeaky toys. She is not fond of sharing her stuff with other dogs. If there is a resident dog in the home, it is recommended that their resources (treats, toys, food) are managed, especially while they are getting to know each other. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
