Butters joined Mattie's Place as an owner surrender, when his person found a 1 year old, 24 pound, French Bulldog too much work.<br/><br/>People forget about the Bulldog part and solely focus on the Frenchie and that can often lead to a mismatch of dog and person.<br/><br/>Yes, Frenchies are adorable and Butters is no exception, but he is a young Bulldog and is as stubborn as they come in the breed and is a higher energy dog, working through his teenage period, stuck between puppy and adult.<br/><br/>Butters is an extremely friendly boy and loves his people and that love is very transitional to whomever has the next snack. He's a food motivated boy down to his very soul.<br/><br/>Adopting Butters means an adopter must understand the limitations of a brachycephalic breed and the health issues that can come with them; breathing issues (Butters is not a BOAS surgery candidate), temperature intolerance, vulnerable to chronic ulcers, dry eye and various eye traumas due to their shallow and bulging eyes, dental disease and digestive and skin issues. <br/><br/>Butters did arrive with an ear infection which is healing beautifully. He does have "selective hearing" but he's certainly not deaf.<br/><br/>We also believe he may have some mild seasonal allergies due to his pink ears and muzzle, but he's not symptomatic in anyway.<br/><br/>Not cat tested but seems unfazed by "prey" on the street. Boisterous and overzealous in meeting other dogs, so he needs to learn some manners on greeting. He lived with kids and was non problematic, but given he can be a little mouthy and bratty at times, a home with older kids would be needed, but visiting kids of any age would be absolutely fine.<br/><br/>Though he's a higher energy dog, a few decent walks or outdoor play session with his adopter daily, should provide enough exercise to keep Butters happy and in shape. <br/><br/>Frenchies enjoy participating in canine sports such as obedience, agility, and rally, and I think with Butters having some athletic structure and desire, he may be a good candidate to try out. He is on the higher energy side of the French Bulldog.<br/>That said, as a flat-faced breed, he should never be allowed to exert himself in hot or humid weather or beyond his comfort zone.<br/><br/>Butters is a really good guy. He needs an adopter that understands the breed and willing to work with a professional trainer to help him be the very best version of himself as he grows into adulthood.<br/><br/><br/>FROM THE FOSTER:<br/><br/>Butter is a sweet soul who warms up quickly to everyone he meets. A classic frenchie that is as stubborn as he is cute; you will likely question if he's deaf when you don't have treats to give. <br/><br/>Butter is great on walks and rarely pulls. He walks beautifully beside/around you with a loose leash. Occasionally, he will try to lunge towards other dogs to greet them but with redirection, he will sit calmly beside you until they pass. He has good leash manners and will focus on his handler during walks, often looking up at them (usually expecting treats because he's very food motivated!). We take him on 3 short (15 min) walks with 2-3 additional potty breaks throughout the day.<br/><br/>Highly food motivated, Butter is not a picky eater and will need a slow feeder for his own good. He is very receptive to training and learns quickly as long as there are treats.<br/><br/>At home, he's fine to nap in his crate or at your feet while you are occupied. He's still quite young so expect some zoomies throughout the day.<br/><br/>He's been sleeping in his crate overnight pretty well with just a few whines at the start before he eventually settles. If we're sleeping in a bit during mornings, he will whine slightly to let you know he wants to get his day started. <br/><br/>He is mostly potty trained but has had a few accidents in his crate; however, he definitely prefers doing his business outdoors. <br/><br/>We haven't seen any signs of separation anxiety, as he is able to be left at home in his crate for up to 4 hours with no sign of distress.<br/><br/>With some of the bluest eyes ever seen in a dog, his little tail nub will wiggle to show how excited he is to see you.
