Bug's Story

Pug Rescue of New England (PRoNE) is a non-profit 501(c)(3), all volunteer foster home based rescue organization.

MEET BUG!

We are ready to find 2-year-old Bug a very special adopter. Bug is a true rescue. He is a beautiful and sweet boy who came to us from Pug Nation LA after being in a shelter where he landed with injuries consistent with being struck by a car. The folks at the shelter fixed him up and neutered him and he then spent some time at Pug Nation before flying east to us in September.

Once we were able to observe Bug in a foster home setting, he exhibited some behaviors which we have been working on addressing. Because we have no idea what his life was like prior to rescue, there is a part of his story which remains a mystery. Bug has shown aggression towards people particularly when he is in new situations. We cannot emphasize enough that we do not know what kind of life he had and what things may make him fearful. We are not certain if these episodes are related to vision loss, brain damage sustained from his traumatic head injuries or a history of abuse. An ophthalmology consult reveals that Bug does have some low night vision as well as difficulty tracking moving items such as treats which may contribute some to his reactivity.

Now that Bug has been with an experienced foster who has established boundaries and a relationship of trust, we see Bug making great progress!

Because of Bug's status as a work in progress, we will be seeking placement in a home without children and where children are not regular visitors. Bug needs an experienced dog person not necessarily an experienced pug person. Someone with the patience required to continue to work with him and his glitches. Bug's foster dad describes him as a big dog in a small dog suit. Says he has a terrier brain, although his DNA shows him as 87% Pug 13% Pekinese. He loves to play with his big dog foster brother, and you may have seen his staring contest with the cockatiel on our social media. We think he'd love a bigger high energy dog to tumble around with.

Bug is happiest when playing and eating (he is a pug after all). He is a good boy for grooming and was an excellent traveler by land and air. He is a cuddle bug with an independent streak. Bug is a mouthy guy. He likes to chew His foster dad is working with him as far as the strength of his bite and he has made a lot of progress when it comes to learning to control himself. He likes to bark during mealtime and growls at television, but hey, did you see the Stranger Things finale? We were growling too! Bug loves his toys! He will whip them around and then lovingly place them aside for later. He does also do some resource guarding. Depending on the person, he will snap when attempts to remove his food bowl are made as he did when the person who does not typically feed him went to pick up his bowl too soon. He does not bother with the other dog's food though. He knows it is not his. Bug very much wants to be a good boy, and he truly is a wonderful dog. His new person will just need to be fully dedicated to ensuring he has a safe, secure environment where his needs are put first. Patience and commitment will lay the groundwork for a very special relationship for many years to come.

ADOPTION FEE: $550.00 based on age $650.00 minus $100 mixed breed discount.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ADOPTING BUG:

No children

Fenced yard for free play preferred

Daily walks

Experienced dog owner with patience and the commitment to work through Bugs transition and ongoing needs

Commitment to continued monitoring of Bug's vision and follow up as necessary

Not cat tested, but shows no prey drive

Another playful canine companion would be really nice for Bug

If you are interested in adopting, your home situation MUST meet this criteria:

A vet reference check, dog walker check (if applicable), landlord check (if applicable), a phone interview and home visit will be conducted prior to approval. If you think a pug is right for your family and you meet the criteria, please apply to adopt on our website at www.pugrescueofnewengland.org.

BE SURE TO REFERENCE THE SPECIFIC PUG!

Our mission is simple: we find homes for abandoned and surrendered pugs in New England. Our pugs will be UTD on shots and spayed or neutered prior to adoption. You must be a resident of the New England states. Due to a change in state regulations, we are no longer adopting outside of New England.

PRoNE is supported by adoption fees, donations and funds raised through auctions and events. Adoption fees range from $200-$1,000 which is based on age of the dog. Effective in January 2023, we have imposed a $150 Spay/Neuter Fee (if required) and a $500 Transportation Fee (For dogs requiring air/cargo travel). Pug Mixes will be discounted by $100 off the fee for their age range. Pairs and Triples will be discounted by $50 per dog.

< 1 year old = $1000
1-2 years old= $750
3-5 years old= $600
6-7 years old= $500
8-10 years old= $400
11-12 years old= $300
Over 12 = $200
$150.00 Spay/Neuter Fee (if the dog requires it)
$500.00 Transportation Fee (for dogs requiring air/cargo travel)

Adoption FAQs:
pugrescueofnewengland.org/adopt/adoption-faqs

Adoption App: pugrescueofnewengland.org/adopt/adoption-application

Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PugRescueofNewEngland/

1/11/26 8:52 PM
