Buck 22136's Story
Meet Buck!
If your couch or yard is complete except for missing a quirky, 60 lb champion napper,
look no further. Buck is elite. He loves relaxing! This guy will happily nap in the yard all
day. He still has plenty of energy for walks, a romp at the dog park, or playing with
friends, but values his relaxation quite a bit.
Overall, he is a very easy-going fellow. Buck (or, Bucky-Boo) is content with a couple of
good walks, a trip to the dog park, and some belly rubs. He is incredibly low
maintenance. He is an explorer at heart, and loves walking through tall grass, fields,
and especially on top of pallets or retaining walls where he can. His two favorite
evening activities are supervising other people's activities, or napping on a dog bed.
When he sees his food bowl being prepared, he even tippy-taps on his big coonhound
toesies in gleeful anticipation. If you say his name, his tail will start wagging.
We will get right into it: Buck thrives on predictability and relaxing on his own schedule.
If he's comfortably settled in and is asked to move, or if he realizes his person is
preparing to leave the house, he makes it very clear he doesn't appreciate this
interruption. He can publicly and dramatically proclaim his dissatisfaction by growling
and barking, which will be startling if you don't expect it. He will almost always comply
with what is being asked of him, but he makes it clear he disagrees, grumbling the
whole way about how "unfair" everything in his life is. He is on anxiety meds to help him
with these challenges, but at this point they are part of his personality. Buck needs
someone who accepts this is just who he is, and works with him on predictability and
personal space. He will do best with adults who can read his signals and understand
that he is communicating (rather rudely) as best he can.
Foster mom found that just walking away when he starts his tantrum is the best tactic.
For this reason, a home with younger kids is not a good idea, as he can be amazingly
passionate in his stubbornness. He will also need to be carefully introduced to new
people in the house, as he doesn't like to be surprised by too much change. Foster
mom crates him when expecting a guest. Foster mom also noticed that Buck really
needs to go to bed about 10 PM, as he tends to be grouchier later at night. He's been
sleeping in his crate at night and never makes a sound. For the right family, his
behaviors are manageable, albeit a little eccentric. His new family needs to understand
that it will take him awhile to figure out his new home and feel comfortable enough to let
his goofy, playful side show.
Buck would love to go to a home with a fenced yard, as he is perfectly content to lie
quietly out in the sunshine all day. His house manners are excellent, he respects
boundaries, doesn't counter-surf (within reason), and rarely barks. Buck does, however,
freely emit dramatic groans, yawns, sighs, and an impressive range of other honks and
squeaks. He's been with the current foster for months now, and really only barks when

he is at the dog park and sees his new friends are leaving, or if he is lucky enough to
spy a mountain biker on the nearby trail. He also barks if he feels he's being
inconvenienced, as I described above.
He gets along great with other dogs of all shapes and sizes, and just ignores cats. He
is gentle with shy dogs and a solid match for the playful, boisterous ones. If a dog says
"no," Buck will generally leave them alone without question. Don't let his love of naps
fool you, though. This guy can really move when he wants to, which is usually playing
with his foster sister or racing the bikers along the fence at the dog park.
He is a fantastic dog to take to a brewery, patio, or dog park. Outside the home, he
makes friends with everyone he meets, assuming the whole world exists to pet him.
He's even been to a senior living center, where his new friends there all told him how
handsome he is. On walks, Buck wants to cross the street to greet people, and often
tries to visit random houses as well. If we walk by a pickup truck, this southern boy will
try to jump in. Buck is obsessed with car rides, and often waits patiently beside the car,
even if there is no sign we are going anywhere. Sadly, his foster mom doesn't have a
pickup truck, just a hatchback. He rides affably in the back, nose pressed against the
back window and tail helicoptering gleefully, to the amusement and entertainment of the
cars behind. Unlike for his foster sisters, the destination isn't important, it is the car ride
itself he enjoys. Foster mom is working on his understanding that he can't launch his
coonhound cannonball into the car every time the door opens, no matter how tempting it
is.
His top priority is his own comfort - you need to show him that he gets his meals on
time, a few leg-stretches (walks or hanging out in the yard) each day, and most of all:
where he can enjoy his naps. In return, Buck is absolutely a goofy, loving dog. He will
entertain you by trying to play with the laundry basket or even the lawn mower. He will
insert his face into your personal space and just insist he needs his ears scratched. He
rests his chin in your hand and just relishes the love given to him. He even cuddles for a
nap on the couch like it's the best thing he's ever experienced. Give Buck a chance to
be YOUR life-sized coonhound lawn ornament, or couch throw, or household chore
supervisor. He excels in all of these. If you open your heart to this opinionated couch
potato, he is really just looking for someone who genuinely likes him for who he is, and
hands him a treat from time to time.
