Bruce's Story

Name: Bruce
Breed: Husky
Sex: Male
Age: 2 years
Weight: 50lbs

History
Bruce came to the shelter when he was only a few months old, and through no fault of his own, he has spent essentially his entire life here. He was being held here while a court case was taking place and while other puppies were growing up in homes, learning house manners, going for walks, meeting new people, and experiencing the world, Bruce was growing up in a kennel.

His long stay has left him behind in the experiences and life skills that most dogs his age would have had the opportunity to develop. He has spent his formative years with limited exposure to the normal routines and experiences of a home. Bruce did live with his brother, Kobe, who is also available for adoption. Although they have spent much of their lives together, the two have very different personalities. Kobe is the more serious and strong-willed of the pair, while Bruce is the goofy, exuberant one.

Now that Bruce is available for adoption, he finally has the opportunity to leave the shelter behind and experience life as part of a family.

Personality
Bruce is a big, goofy, affectionate dog with a puppy-like personality. He absolutely loves people and is very sweet. He enjoys attention and affection and is eager to interact with anyone willing to spend time with him. He has an almost comical amount of enthusiasm. Bruce can get so excited that his entire body seems to join the party before his brain catches up! He'll run around, throw himself into play bows, bounce around, and generally have a difficult time containing himself.

Compared with his brother Kobe, Bruce is much more of a happy-go-lucky goofball. He doesn't have quite the same serious, "I have opinions about everything" attitude. Bruce is more likely to greet you with enthusiasm and wonder what fun you're going to have together.

Behavior
Bruce is not currently house trained or leash trained, so his adopter will need to teach him these skills from the beginning. He has also had very little formal training. The good news is that Bruce is smart and highly treat motivated. He already knows "sit," giving his future family a great foundation to build upon. With consistent positive-reinforcement training, he should be capable of learning a great deal.

Bruce has a high energy level and is still extremely puppy-like in his behavior. When excited, he may jump, run, bounce, play bow, and generally turn into a furry tornado. He will need appropriate outlets for his energy through exercise, play, training, and mental enrichment. Learning how to settle and relax will be just as important for Bruce as learning commands. He will need guidance in understanding when it is time to play and when it is time to calm down.

His adopter should also be prepared for a transition period as Bruce adjusts to life outside the shelter. Many everyday experiences may be new to him, and he will need someone who is patient and willing to introduce him to new things at his own pace.

Health
Bruce will need the regular grooming and coat maintenance expected of a Husky, including frequent brushing to help manage his thick coat and shedding. He is otherwise ready to begin the next chapter of his life. His greatest needs are not complicated—they are time, training, structure, exercise, and experience.

Ideal Home
Bruce needs a family who is prepared to teach rather than expect. His ideal adopter will understand that he has missed out on many of the experiences that help a young dog grow into a well-mannered adult. He would thrive with someone who enjoys training and is willing to work on everything from house and leash training to basic manners and learning how to settle. An active household that can provide plenty of physical and mental stimulation would be ideal.

Most importantly, Bruce needs someone who can look past the jumping, bouncing, and puppy antics and see the sweet, affectionate dog underneath. Bruce has spent nearly his entire life waiting for the opportunity to have a family. He never got the chance to grow up in a home—now he deserves the chance to finally learn what that feels like.
