Brody's Story
My name is Brody; I was originally rescued from a puppy mill in Illinois. I was amongst the dogs that Maine Sheltie Rescue transported back to New England in January. People say I am a handsome, bi-black 9 month old sheltie boy on the larger size, I will take their word for it.

I know I am one of the lucky ones that doesn’t have to spend the rest of my life in a dirty small cage being overbred or worse. However, this has caused me a lot of trauma and it will take some time for me to recover to be a normal dog. I am a little sad because they tell me of all the 5 shelties from Illinois, I am the only one that hasn’t found their furever home yet. I think I am ready to make that jump now, I want my own family to blossom with.

A little bit about me. The first day I came into my foster home, I met my new fosterbrother and, man, we became best friends fast. I stuck with him and he showed me the ropes. I found out he was the same age and had the same fun level as me. We play all the time. I love all the other dogs and even the cats.

I have become fond of my foster dad. I think he’s cool and I can trust him. He lets me hang out in his office during the day while he works. I get to sleep on his side of the bed, and I like it when he gives me some pats. I am still very nervous around my foster mom. My foster brother says she’s the best and loves all over her, but something in my past has spooked me and I can’t get there yet. I am still afraid of new people. I let out a weird bark at my foster parent’s granddaughters so I don’t know how I feel about little ones yet. I think I was just afraid; I am a gentle soul. I really wish I wasn’t so nervous and could trust more humans.

I have made some progress though. I don’t have to leave my long leash on anymore when I go out in the backyard. In fact, I come right in with my foster dad. My foster mom can leave the door open and acts like she’s not looking so I can sneak back inside. I walk on a secured leash and harness nicely, and I think I like riding in the car.

My foster parents say I’m very fast at running, and I will jump over anything in my way. They think with the proper training I could thrive at agility. That sounds fun!

I am sure I will need my person/new family to be patient with me. I am going to need some time, someone with understanding of my past and why it will take me a bit to trust. It would probably help if you could take me to some training to build my confidence and begin to bond with you.

I will definitely need a secured fenced yard and would love a brother or sister with the same energy level. They will be able to show me the ropes and help me build my confidence. I have to warn you, I am a bit of a chewer but I think it has to do with my past or it might be that I am still a puppy too. I think it helps calm my nerves. I just read somewhere that 15-20 minutes of chewing is like an hour of exercise. So chew toys and no-hides bones would be a good way to keep me busy.

I know this might be a difficult ask, but my ideal home would be where I am rarely left at home alone. I need to get past my traumas. I have a long way to go and need a person/family that is willing to work with me to help me the best I can be. I am only 9 months old, so I know I have a good chance of recovery with patience, time and love.

Brody

PS From Brody's Foster Family:
The average height of a Sheltie is 13 - 16 inches. Brody is oversized at 20 inches at the shoulder. He will need a companion dog, one that would be a good role model. He loves to play, a friend around his size is a must. He needs a secure fenced yard - he is fearful. He needs someone who is dedicated to obedience training, exercise, and patience to bring out his very best. He will need time to blossom. It may take months to a year. The potential is there!
