Birdie's Story

Great things come in small packages! Meet Birdie, a sweet, smart, active & compact young French Brittany girl who is waiting to meet her “forever family”. Outside play time is her very favorite, and she loves playing with her foster sibling running & chasing: she’s very fast! Birdie (as her name suggests) LOVES to point at birds in the yard, and is very interested in observing squirrels and chipmunks. Her leash manners are coming along and will benefit from additional training: she’s well-behaved but her genetics have told her that walks are for hunting, so she does pace enthusiastically from side-to-side when on-leash, which is typical for her breed. She’s interested in & friendly with other dogs: a home with another friendly and confident dog(s) would likely be a great fit for her, as she seems to feel most confident when supported by a canine friend. It’s not known how she does with cats. Birdie understands basic commands like sit, stay, down, outside, and “no”; she mostly comes when her name is called inside the fenced in area, and because she does enjoy outdoor adventures, will require a yard with a physical fence to ensure she doesn’t venture off on her own.

Birdie is working on her shyness with men, and it does take her time to build and maintain trust with them. She appears to be fearful of children and teens, and will avoid them: introduced to new people, she will often bark and tremble and try to hide. However, when she does build a relationship with someone, she becomes a loving, loyal, playful & dedicated “Velcro dog” who loves nothing more than to snuggle up on a lap and cuddle, staring up at her people adoringly with her beautiful golden-brown eyes. She does appear to feel much more comfortable with women. A calm, relatively quiet home with adults only would be the best fit for her.

Birdie is up-to-date on all vaccinations, spayed, microchipped, crate trained, and house trained. Her gorgeous wavy black roan coat is easy to maintain, requiring only an occasional brushing to maintain its shiny health & silky texture. She’s an enthusiastic eater, and currently benefits from using a slow-feeder dish to eat at a more moderate pace. Birdie responds best to positive reinforcement, patience and a gentle voice, and once settled, may benefit from additional work with a trainer who can help her build her confidence and establish trust with a wider variety of people. With time and patience and love, it’s anticipated that Birdie will be a trusting, playful, loving and loyal companion to the right family.

If you're looking for that "diamond in the rough", perhaps Birdie is just the girl for you.
