Meet Betty

MARR covers Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Wisconsin. Betty is being fostered in IA currently. However, transportation is available for adoptions within our coverage area.

Betty is a striking mix with brindle points on a black coat. Her eyes are a deep coffee color and her ears are very expressive. She weighs about 85 lbs and is fully vetted.

Betty absolutely loves people and although she may be just a bit shy at first upon meeting a new friend, she quickly leans in for a booty scratch. She loves children as well, although she can be a bit rambunctious in her play, so care would need to be taken with very small children.

Betty also really enjoys a playful dog friend that is medium size or larger. She enjoys small dogs as well, but she has trouble adjusting her play energy and style to a much smaller dog, which can in turn result in a frightened or injured little dog. We are working on this, but at this time, it's best if her playmates are a little bigger. Betty plays well and handles conflict with deference and avoidance.

Betty also enjoys cats, way too much, and cats do not enjoy her. She will chase and play quite roughly with them due to a fairly high prey drive, so it is best for Betty if she is in a home without cats (or other small, furry animals). This also applies to small dogs.

Betty is highly social and enjoys being involved in family activities. She is incredibly playful and is up for any kind of fun you can think of to have with her. She has a little bit of "puppy" left and will sometimes grab a pillow or something that is not Betty-approved, but is easily redirected with "leave it" and being offered an appropriate toy. She loves squeakers, and stuffies, and is fairly gentle with them.

She loves to go for walks and we are working on her leash skills. She is doing great in her Balance Harness. She is learning about how to respond to leash tension and we are also working on the "heel" cue, although she really enjoys wandering and sniffing her little nose off on the long line, too. She also enjoys car rides and looking out the window.

Betty gets a little whiny in her kennel if she feels like she's being left out, especially if she hasn't had her exercise needs met yet, but she settles quickly. She does tend to tear up blankets in her kennel, so we do not allow her to have one for safety reasons. She will go in on cue and we reinforce that with a few treats. Betty will also "roo" or howl when she's excited about something, and will often greet you with a stuffed toy in her mouth! Other than that, she is pretty quiet. She does not bark at things out the window or people coming to the door. In fact, I can't say I have ever heard her bark at all in the house. Due to that, she could potentially be a good fit for an apartment or other shared-wall home as long as there was a solid plan in place for exercise.

Betty is great at sit and also knows down, paw and kennel. We are working on some additional cues and also working on recall- she improves every day with that. She is very food motivated and also toy motivated, which makes training easy. She loves interacting with humans, so she looks forward to training sessions. She does tend to want to counter surf so we use a combination of management and "four on the floor" training to address that. We are also working on pawing/jumping in excitement and she is doing very well with that!

Betty enjoys grooming and will even relax in your lap for nail trims. She does not appear to have any handling issues- we go at her pace and use lots of treats/reinforcement. She and her vet are besties. :)

Betty's ideal adopter would be able to have playtime/exercise time with Betty a couple times per day and be ready to snuggle up on the couch after. She is the type of dog that can go to patios, Lowe's, and walk at the farmer's market and enjoys that type of activity (obviously care would need to be taken with small dogs in those environments).

Betty has a pending DNA test to discover her genetic makeup, and we will update that here once we get the results. This will help us be able to better understand her needs from a breed-trait standpoint along with her individual needs. UPDATE: Betty's DNA test revealed that she is a great mix of mostly rott (73%) and 27% bully breed!
