Bernie's Story
Over 18 million dogs live on Mexico's streets. The Meximutt Project, a BAPBR initiative, tackles this crisis at the source—through comprehensive spay/neuter programs and by connecting rescued dogs with loving Oregon families.

Since 2019: 400+ dogs adopted, 3,200+ spayed/neutered.

INTERESTED IN ADOPTING? Read carefully and apply at www.bapbr.org.

We’re unable to respond to Petfinder inquiries due to a system issue that prevents us from viewing them.

***************************************

• NAME: Bernie

• AGE: ~1 years old

• WEIGHT: ~17 lbs

• BREED(S): Dachshund mix (our best guess since they’re rescues!)

• GOOD WITH DOGS? Yes

• GOOD WITH CATS? Yes

• GOOD WITH KIDS? Yes, but please keep in mind that they must be taught to respect the dog’s space, belongings, and food.

• HOUSEBROKEN? No, not 100% yet -- Please keep in mind that our dogs are rescued off the streets, they are NOT always 100% housebroken and will need time and patience to adjust. Even in a foster home in Mexico, the dogs are often living in an environment with no carpet or grass or living outside. In the house, it is usually tile flooring and outside it is dirt/concrete. Most of our dogs transition well and only need about 1-2 weeks to get on a potty schedule/routine.

• LOCATION: Currently in Guadalajara foster care. 2-4 weeks to arrange flight once adoption is approved

**Meet BERNIE**

When Bernie was found wandering the streets, he was starving, in pain, and covered in severe mange so advanced it had caused infections throughout his little body. He was immediately hospitalized – fighting on multiple fronts with antibiotics, immune support, and round-the-clock care.

But here's what the vet team noticed right away: even at his sickest, Bernie's spirit never dimmed. He wagged through his medicated baths, leaned into every gentle touch, and looked up at his caregivers with those big, soulful eyes as if to say, I know you're helping me.

*The Velcro Pup*

Today, Bernie is fully recovered and ready to show his new family what all that fighting was for. His foster describes him as a true "velcro dog" – he wants to be wherever you are, doing whatever you're doing. "When you hold him, he just melts," his foster says. "He goes completely relaxed in your arms, like he's finally safe."

And then there are those ears. Enormous, floppy, Yoda-like ears that he lifts one at a time to tune into whatever's caught his attention. They're ridiculous. They're perfect. You'll never stop smiling at them.

*Life with Bernie*

Bernie is playful and toy-motivated, always ready for a game. He gets along beautifully with other dogs and cats, though he sometimes announces dogs he sees on walks with a few barks – more excitement than anything else.

He loves car rides, enjoys stroller adventures, and is still learning his house-training basics (patience and consistency will get him there).

Bernie is looking for someone who wants a loyal sidekick – a pup who'll curl up next to you on the couch, ride along on your errands, and remind you daily that the best things in life are warm, have four legs, and come with silly ears.

He fought hard to get here. Are you ready to show him what he was fighting for?

***************************************

READY TO APPLY? We arrange the flight to Oregon (included in fee) with weekly photo/video updates
4. Airport pickup at PDX—pay adoption fee, receive medical records, welcome your new family member home!

• Timeline: 2-4 weeks for CDC/USDA paperwork and flight arrangement once approved

• Adoption Fee: $650 includes:
Flight to U.S. • Spay/neuter • USDA import permit • Health Certificate •
All vaccines (DHLPPi, Rabies, Bordetella) • Full blood work & health tests (CBC, blood parasite tests, parvo/giardia/coronavirus test) • Flea/tick/heartwork treatment & deworming • Microchip • Grooming • Collar, leash & ID tag

• Payment: Venmo, PayPal, Cash App, Zelle, or cash
Previous adopters often tell us the pre-arrival bonding process makes pickup day feel like welcoming home a family member they've been missing.

The Meximutt Project is 100% volunteer-run by a small team of dedicated animal lovers. We cannot respond to every application due to high volume, but if we think there's a good match, we'll reach out.

If you're ready to give this Meximutt the loving home they’ve been waiting for, we'd love to hear from you!
