Bernadette "Bernie" - Loves Attention - 6' fence or Walk Only Home Great Pyrenees Indianapolis, IN

Bernie was surrendered to the shelter because her owner could no longer keep her contained. Bernie is 4 years old and was being used as a livestock guardian. She decided she wanted a different life and would climb the fence every night and go in search of humans. Her owner was afraid she would be hit by a vehicle, so decided it was best if she found a new home. She loves everyone and is good with cats, kids, but can be dog selective. She does not like to be contained in a crate. She would be a great companion for someone who wants a dog who can go places with them. She also would also make a great therapy dog. She is eager to please, has a great disposition with people and thrives on attention and petting. Bernie weighs about 80 lbs.

We recommend obedience training for all newly adopted pyrs, to help you create a special bond with you and your new friend, and so you have a well behaved canine. Great Pyrenees are willing to learn, but are not as eager to comply with commands as much as other breeds. They are bred to be independent thinkers. Applicants must be over 25, own their own home and all children in household must be over 6 years old. Your resident pets must be up to date on vaccines, sterilized, you must have a good history of vet care for them for the past two years, and you must have used heartworm preventative year round for your dogs and be able to provide proof of purchase.


Bernie will be placed as an inside pet with outside privileges. You MUST have a 6' visible, securely fenced yard accessible from your home. Invisible fencing does not work with this breed and they will take the shock for the freedom. Great Pyrenees are bred to roam and will create their own territory if not secured, which can led to them being lost, hit by vehicles or shot by people who see them as a threat. The breed is not a good off leash dog, and cannot be trusted to not run away. A Great Pyrenees off leash is a " DisAPyr."

All of our dogs marked as needing foster homes are also available for adoption. If a dog is listed on this site, it is available. No need to contact us to see if it is, We do require you complete the adoption application prior to meeting a dog.

We also offer a foster to adopt program. You foster the dog, and have first right of refusal on them if an approved application is submitted for them.

In fostering a dog, the dog comes to you fully vetted. and groomed. You provide good quality food, grooming, and we provide the heartworm preventative and medical care, if needed* .(*Based on approval from IGPR.)
